| Rudder System found on Towboats | ||
| This system is not special to Towboats and can also be found on other vessels that require a high degree of manoeuvrability, but is not so common on UK or European craft. | ||
| This multi - rudder system has a
single rudder conventionally positioned astern of each propeller, used to steer
when going ahead and a pair of "Flanking" (sometimes called "Backing") rudders
mounted each side of the propeller shaft ahead of the propeller which are used
when going astern. This makes a total of THREE rudders with ONE main rudder and TWO flanking rudders, The flanking rudders work as a pair and are used independently of the main rudder. |
