Widemouth
Widemouth...big guitars, big songs ...big
gob!
Widemouth are a two piece rock band whose
thuggish exterior belies a cynical passion for songs with depth,
colour, soul an big choruses, a sour pop where Tom Waites meets
Tom Jones round at Ian Hunters' house.
The idea for the band was sown a few years
ago when the two members, Tim Hands (vocals, bass) and Jonathan
Maris (guitar, vocals), met at a house party in central London
whilst looking for the last remaining can of lager.
A period of time elapsed during which
Jonathan toured with Woody from Madness' ban "Fat" and
played in the backing band for The Mysterious Michael - Poet and
New age conjurer, and Tim toured Iceland and later Finland and
Germany as a member Peter Simpsons Bamboo Orchestra.
They were reunited in the London based
Punk/Funk combo "Freakatician" who, though enjoying
considerable radio air play and positive review never realized
their full potential. Finally disbanding in 1997 due to the usual
clichés.
Deciding to continue working together
they abandoned the idea of forming another band and concentrated
on songwriting and finding a recognizable style. The fact that
there are only two members made the writing more flexible as they
were not duty bound to feature particular players or instruments.
In response to peer pressure about the
songs, the two settled on the name "Widemouth" and ventured
out onto the live circuit, where their particular brand of sour
pop has been well received. They have decided to stick with the
two man line up as, firstly it makes royalty arrangements simple
and secondly, like the frog from which they take their name you
don't see a lot of them round here do you?
