Cern's Projects CERN has held a number of workshops which includes:
1994 - Ecotourism Workshop, Dominica
1995 - Environmental Journalism workshop , Port-au-Prince Haiti. The workshop was held in association with Panos, The Caribbean Institute of Mass-Communication (CARIMAC) University of the West Indies; REPIE (Haitian governmental NGO of environmental professionals) and INFo Services a Haitian governmental training organisation.
1996 - Environmental Journalism Workshop - a follow-up to the 1995 session in Port au Prince, Haiti. CERN in association with Panos Institute Washington took five English speaking Caribbean journalists to Haiti for two purposes: (a) interaction with Haitian counterparts for interchange of information and sharing of experiences, (b) to providing a briefing on Solid Waste Management, Ecotourism, and Small Businesses which were to form the basis for a pilot radio programme "Island Beat".
1998 - St. Vincent: Three-day environmental journalism training session (April 21-23) on watershed management and sustainable development. The workshop was held in collaboration with the Natural Resources Management Unit of the Organisation of Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
CERN provided coverage for:
1993 - The Caribbean Conservation Congress, Jamaica
1994 - Coverage of the UN SIDS conference, Barbados Coverage of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States was provided by a Pool of reporters drawn from media houses across the region. The Pool was formed with sponsorship from the Caribbean Development Bank, and assistance from Caribbean Media Workers Association and the Caribbean News Agency (CANA)
1994 - Annual International Whaling Commission Meeting, Mexico The Meeting held in Puerto Vallarta, was important to the region because of economic threats to Caribbean island states which supported Japan's bid to resume whaling.
1995 - CERN among pool coverage from Third World countries, organised by the Panos Institute, for the Fourth UN World Conference on Women, Beijing, China
1996 - CERN participates in pool from Third World countries, organised by the Panos Institute, ¾for the International Conference on Population and Development, Cairo, Egypt
1997 - Ministerial Review Meeting, Barbados, of the 1994 SIDS Conference in preparation for the 5-year review by the UN General Assembly

OTHER PROJECTS:

1997- Fifteen-part pilot radio programme "Island Beat" launched. Material commissioned by CERN and produced by CERN/CANA and distributed via CANA's radio satellite network to 24 radio stations free of cost. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) also sponsored some of the programme on Community Forestry. Programme for full production in 1998 with sponsorship from PANOS/CANARI
1997- MERGER TALKS:
CERN looked at the possibility of a merger with another specialist group. Health journalists across the Caribbean are coming together to form the Caribbean Health Journalists Network. In a teleconference across 14 Caribbean states the concept of an organisation involving environment, health, science, and technology journalists were agreed with the intention of forming CHEST - Caribbean Health Environment Science and Technology Journalists Network. A meeting was held in Barbados in May of that year
