The small boat that changed the world of shipping - The "Turbinia" doing 34 Knots , an unheard of speed in 1897 , and powered by the first of Charles Parsons Steam Turbines . This picture was taken in 1897 by Alfred John West and it was considered impossible to capture on film ,such a fast moving subject

A lovely picture of "Leda (left) and "Venus" (right ) , somewhere off the Norwegian coast .   CSO "Constructor" leaving the Tyne in 2002 on her way to South Africa . Formally the Stena "Constructor" , she was built in 1980 as a Diving support vessel but converted to a Pipe layer by Cammell Laird on the Tyne in 2000 / 2001 . Measures 136m x 25m x 10m and is powered by 5 Nohab V16 Diesel engines , each delivering 3,600 Hp . Operated by Coflexip Stena Offshore International ( CSO) .

Sami Yazici - Fuat Miras . Dutch tug "Zeeleeuw" - formally "Afon Braint" . Built 1975 by Hoop , Hardinxveld BV . Measures 26.85m x 7.46m x 2.97m and operated by Smit International of Rotterdam .

Here is a rare sight on the Tyne - a Sailing Coble . She is BK255 "Royal Diadem" built 1948 by Harrisons of Amble and now owned by Peter Weightman . She is an 8 plank coble , measuring 30 ft 4 ins by 8 ft 4 ins beam and fitted with a Kelvin P4 diesel .- July 2003 Car carrier "Acacia Ace" leaving the Tyne Feb 2004 . Built in 1982 in Japan as the "Australia Highway" . Tug "Roseberry Cross " in attendance .

Elke Earl of Zetland
"Elke" arriving March 2004 "Earl of Zetland" , now a floating Restaurant in the Royal Quays , Albert & Edward Dock. March 2004 .The Earl of Zetland was built in 1939 by Hall Russell of Aberdeen and operated between Shetland and Orkney as an inter-island ferry until 1975. Then she was used as a survey vessel until conversion at Great Yarmouth into a floating restaurant in 1988.

The FPSO Bonga ,which is named after a Nigerian fish , entered the Tyne early in the morning on 16 Nov 2002 for a £300 million operation to fit new oil production machinery at the Amex Yard at Wallsend. Having no engines , it took 8 Deep sea tugs to manage the tow all the way from South Korea. Although not the most elegant looking vessel , she is the biggest ever to enter the Tyne weighing in at 300,000 tons .
