South Shields is a canny auld town on the River Tyne , and it suddenly occurred to me that there must be many folk out there who have moved away and might be curious as to how the town is getting on today in the new Millennium and also how it was those many years ago . As there are many picture files it may take a little longer than usual to open the site , but I think it is well worth the wait ~ "Gan on give it a go".

Over the years ,many people have arrived in the town either for a holiday , as part of a ship`s crew or to get their Marine Qualifications at its famous Marine college . Most will have left and must live in all parts of the world with little likelihood of ever returning .It is for them and all ex Shields folk , that I have created this page. I have been out and about taking pictures of the town , just like the revered Amy Flagg , who in the 1930`s spent a lot of time taking pictures of the town ~ we owe a lot to her . We also owe a lot to Photographer James Cleet who took a lot of photographs during the 1930's for South Shields Council , prior to the demolition of large areas of the old town . Except where stated , all black and white pictures courtsey of South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council and copyright to them. The background is of the "Fish Lasses " gutting Herring . These Lasses travelled the country "following the Herring" which was generally in a clockwise direction round the British Isle .
