Dunbar Coast Rescue

Dunbar is one of the major towns on the Northeast coast of the East Lothian the town overlooks a very pretty harbour. Overlooking the harbour is the remains of what was once the mightiest castles in Scotland, the rock is believed to have been fortified for the better part of 2000 years.

The town of Dunbar has been consistantly besieged from 1200's to the 1500's and whether the castle fell the attackers usually burned down the town. During the 1650's Cromwell used it as his supply base prior to his defeat of the Scottish Royalists at the Battle of Dunbar.

The main road from Newcastle and Edinburgh is the A1 and just bypasses the town however the town does have a romantic pull to many people passing by the area.

The harbour is basically split into two areas, Victoria harbour built in the 1840's and the Southeast facing Cromwell harbour. The completion of the Cromwell harbour lead to Dunbar's dramatic growth as a fishing town and for a time a whaling port.

To the south of the harbour is a nice beach which adds to Dunbars ranges of attractions this is overlooked by the Dunbar Parish church and the Bellevue Hotel badly damaged in a fire in 1989. Along the coastline are various golf clubs, and beaches, Belhaven bay to the north of Dunbar forms part of the John Muir Country park, named after Dunbar's most famous son. John Muir was born in 1838 and his family shortly emigrated over to the USA. He later went on to form what is now the US National Park System.

The Coastguard team from Dunbar are a dedicated asset for Forth Coastguard and have always provided a good response to any emergency no matter the time of day or night, in all kinds of weather. The teams normally operate half way between North Berwick and St Abbs but have often assisted their flank teams.
