St Andrews Coast Rescue

St Andrews is a well known area to most people however this can be put down to major factors, firstly it is the home of Golf and secondly due to the University whose hallowed halls once rang to the sounds of Prince William.

The city of St Andrews with two main beaches and a small harbour that has small creel boats (lobster and crabs mainly) running from it. A settlement began the life of St Andrews, initially called Kilrimont however by the 10th Century the area had assumed the lead in the role of the Scottish church, thus by the 13th century became the home of the University. The Cathedral once the largest cathedral in Scotland lies to the east of the center of the town overlooking the harbour. The beaches are called East sands, situated near the Golf course and the West Sands located near the harbour. Both of these beaches now have beach lifeguards supplied by the Fife council in providing safety cover for those in difficulty there. The waters around St Andrews draw lots of visitors, either walking up and down the beaches, taking part in leisure time or even walking the Fife Coastal route that runs from Tayport around to the Forth road bridges and further up the river. Further details on these walks can be found by going to the Fife Coastal path site.

The historical town of St Andrews shows how wealthy these houses were in early times, with its rich architecture.

During the month of september the airs over St Andrews roar to the sounds of jets that are participating in the annual RAF air show at Leuchars reportedly one of the best in the United Kingdom.

The Coastguard sector base is situated at West sands immediately adjoining the sports center, with its double doored garages holding both the boat and the rescue equipment stored in the building and the vehicles. The team itself, a mixture of both men and ladies cover from as far as the north side of Dundee, up as far as Perth and along the coastline to Shell bay caravan park, however they may also go over these areas when assisting other coast rescue teams.
