The Essex Alexander School is for training men and women as teachers of the F.M.Alexander Technique
Founded in 1988 by Ken Thompson, this Ilford-based school is STAT
approved with places for around 8-10 students.
BASIC AIM OF THE 3 YEAR COURSE:-
TO TRAIN STUDENTS TO BECOME ADEQUATE TEACHERS
OF THE F.M. ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
The main thing that happens to students in this work is that they undergo change.
By change I mean the whole self - physical, mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual.
When this happens they need a secure and supportive environment and encouragement to stick to
basic Alexander principles.
The Essex Alexander School is a small training
establishment suited for only 8-10 students.
We are therefore able to monitor their progress closely, yet give them space in which to grow.
The structure of our syllabus is to follow F.M.'s discoveries through a sequential pattern so that the
students can build on a firm foundation which will stand them in good stead for later work.
We encourage students to learn slowly, be patient with their progress and to refrain from putting
"hands on" others too soon.
A strong emphasis is therefore placed on a well thought out "means whereby" approach to all
aspects of the course. Constantly requesting students to heighten their sense of awareness. to use
their eyes, become more observant and to "think on their feet".
Because students have preferred ways of learning we endeavour to meet their needs by covering the
main Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic approaches. We also appreciate the value of question and
answer. Students are encouraged to question throughout their training, as this helps to eliminate
misunderstanding and confusion. Because the atmosphere which we create is friendly and supportive,
no one is fearful or apprehensive about questioning.
Visiting teachers add exposure to a variety of styles of teaching.
During their third year students are invited to give a talk to their peer group an some aspect related
to the Technique; they are encouraged to visit other courses and exchange work with other students.
We do not encourage students to work with the general public until they have completed their training.
That will come round quickly enough!
All students have a "turn" from the Director each day, and one group lesson per week. They also have
one private lesson per term. Visiting teachers give "turns" each day for 2 hours.
Games each day provide students with a great opportunity to observe and maintain their working
integrity whilst following a "means whereby" approach to some practical procedures.
Talks take place each day:-
One day is devoted to anatomy/physiology.
One day is "Storytime" - written records from various sources illustrating F.M.'s life and teaching.
The three remaining days are talks from F.M.'s books, covering
Basic Principles, observations etc., with commentary and discussions, also
videos of Senior Teachers, Workshops, and Congresses.
