This information was kindly provided by Chris Biggs. A huge thank you to him.
He left the Rubettes just before Sugar Baby Love was released, and almost Immediately recorded your Baby Aint Your Baby anymore............ .and yes I've also got 2 copies, one as a single and one on a compilation L.P. from 1974 along with the Rollers, Mud, Slade etc..
He then ventured into theatre and appeared in many shows including Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell.
During this time he continued as a session singer on many records.
Around 1980 he joined a 'comedy showband ' called 'Barley who were voted Club act of the year.
This is where I first met him as my now wife, then girlfreind Debbie and myself were friends of theirs and used to drive all over the country to see them perform.
They used to do many cover versions of bands through the 60's, 70's etc Including a Four Seasons medley where Paul's voice really came into it's own, but always ending with Sugar Baby Love.
Paul once told me that he turned down the lead vocals on the Lion Sleeps Tonight by Tight Fit in 1981 and that the bloke on Top of the Pops was miming. The real singer of that song which sold millions of copies only received £50.00.
Later, in 1982 tight fit jumped on the 'stars on 45' medely record bandwagon with 'Back to the 60's part 1 and later part 2. If you track it down anywhere it is actually Paul and Barley singing the bits by the Hollies, the Four Seasons etc.
Paul also recorded a solo single (also 12" dance mix) which was quite a hit in Europe called 'My Baby Holds The Key' under the name 'moulin rouge'.the odd thing was that although it was a dance track , the music was actually Nessun dorma, totally jazzed up.
Paul then left to resume his solo career, including an appearance on
I.T.V.'s Saturday evening show 3.2.1. Which I still have on video along with a live performance by Barley.
About 4 years ago he joined the showgroup 'that'll be the day' who are still very popular although paul left after 2 years.
After that he appeared at the royal albert hall supporting fats domino but after that I lost contact until my mum and dad went to Butlins 3 years ago(strangely, It was at Butlins that I first met Barley) and Paul was in cabaret. My mum had a long chat with Paul and his manager, he said he remembered Debbie and I very well and was amazed that I had teenage kids of my own. A few days later he sent my Mum some signed photo,s which she always kept prominently displayed until she passed away back in May.
He is still performing at clubs and holiday camps in the UK and I hope I will see him again someday.
It might be sad for a 34 year old dad to enthuse about someone like this but as a fan of musical theatre and particularly 70's/80's, if you could hear that voice screaming out in a small club( as I did on one occasion when Barley played at the social club at the top of my road, purely by coincidence) you don't forget it in a hurry.
He was always an extremely nice chap and its been great telling you about him.
