FOLKESTONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB – A CLUB TO BE PROUD OF

Last Saturday Mark Rose played his last game for the club before he moves to London. He wrote in to us and his important words are truly inspirational and describe what our club is all about.

This is what he wrote:

In 1982 at the age of 16 I played what I thought would be my last game of Rugby for school and county. For the next 23 years my regular Saturday afternoon involved kicking a round ball. The in 2006 The Rev Webber said to me, "why don't you come up to the Rugby Club we are looking for a prop in the vets".

I'll never forget the first Saturday up at the club, the bar packed with people I didn't know, and then watching the game as a substitute thinking "its a long time since I have done this and I was only a kid then, will I look an idiot?" It didn't help that during that first game I saw the Folkestone winger knocked out with a single punch from the opposition number 8 and then the Folkestone Second Row break his leg! I came on for the second half and have to say, I loved it! Since that day for the last three years my Saturday afternoons have been a whole new experience.

You may be asking why do I tell you this? The reason is I wanted everyone at the club to know how much I appreciate what goes on down there. Very quickly the bar full of people I didn't know became a bar full of friends. The fear and apprehension about playing the game turned to anticipation of the Thursday night text to say I was in the squad for Saturday and the pleasure of spending my Saturday running round the park for the vets, the third team and this season two games for the seconds! What a joy for an old cart horse like me to run around with those young stallions in the seconds!! Even if, when I stood up on a Sunday to preach I could hardly move!

In July I move to a new job in London and start a new chapter in my life so I have played my last game for Folkestone, quite an emotional day for me after three years of sheer pleasure on a Saturday, for most of the game all I could think was I wasted 23 years of Saturdays by not continuing to play Rugby as a young lad.

I want to say thank you to you for making me so welcome, to Jeff for taking me under his wing and arranging the adventures of the Vets Games, to Pete for giving me games with the thirds, to Jill for the endless pints of orange and lemonade and looking after my keys when I lose them. But to you all a big thank you just for being part of Folkestone Rugby Club. As my life changes drastically in July I see all the changes at The Club and want you to know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you as you continue to provide a "centre of excellence" for Rugby but perhaps more importantly for the sense of community down there.

Thanks and God Bless you all

Mark Rose

DIRECTIONS TO THE BEST CLUB IN KENT

From London:

Leave M20 at J12, take the first exit off the roundabout marked to Newington on the A20. Pass the worker's entrance to Eurotunnel and under some flyovers.

At the roundabout take the first exit and pass over the M20. The club is on your right just 100 yards after crossing the motorway.

From Dover:

Leave M20 at J12, take the third exit off the roundabout marked to Newington on the A20. Pass the worker's entrance to Eurotunnel on your right and under some flyovers.

At the roundabout take the first exit and pass over the M20. The club is on your right just 100 yards after crossing the motorway.
