Fillies Match Report
FRFC Fillies 31 H3 33
Folkestone Fillies played host to H3 at New Burlington Field
hoping to avenge the narrow defeat inflicted at the start of the season. H3
kicked off with a good high ball which was knocked on by the Fillies, the
resulting scrum ensured that the home team were pinned in their 22. Good
recycled ball was spun out to the backs and H3 scored under the posts. The try
was converted. 7-0 to H3. It was an early set back for the girls and would test
their determination. The Fillies struck back immediately from the kick off, H3
having knocked on. The Fillies scrum looked solid and from the base the girls
moved up the pitch through Rose Atkins and winger Katie Martin. H3 turned the
ball over and kicked back down the park. The ball was cleanly taken by full
back Chloe Digby out to Kerri Morgan, Atkins, Hayley Morgan and on to Hannah Batt
who set up a ruck. Scrum half Atkins supplied quick ball to Sammy Parker to
score under the posts. The try was converted by Digby to level the score.
From the kick off the Fillies were judged to have driven over in
the ensuing ruck and H3 were awarded a penalty. H3 took quick ball but Abigail Howland
ripped the ball and got it away to Hannah Daw and onto the younger Morgan who
was pushed into touch. From H3’s line out the Fillies were awarded a penalty as
the away team were caught playing the ball on the floor. Atkins tapped the ball
and passed out to Morgan who went to ground to form a ruck. The ball was
recycled to Parker and from the ruck Atkins broke down the blind side to score
under the posts. Digby added the conversion to make it 14-7.
From the kick off H3 made their way to the home team’s 5 metre
line but good mauling by Paice paid off after she ripped the ball from H3 and
shipped it on to Howland who ran out of the 22. The ball was moved on to Daw
then Kerri Morgan and back to her sister Hayley. The game was stopped for an
injury to H3 and was restarted with a scrum to the Fillies. Atkins moved the
ball out to Parker then Howland with Digby joining the line and breaking the
defence. From the ruck the ball went out to the backs Parker, Howland and Daw
who made a good 15 metres and popped the ball back inside to Howland to score
under the posts. Digby added the conversion bringing the score to 21-7. H3
added a further try before half time making the score at the interval 21-12
The Fillies started the second half with determination. With good
rucking from Amiee Riley, Megan West and Rachel Davies the ball was made available
for the backs. H3 were penalised for offside, Atkins took a quick tap ball out
to Morgan, Howland and popped back to Morgan and on to Hannah Daw to score
under the posts. 26-12. The Fillies were then caught asleep and through a
series of missed tackles allowed H3 to run in two soft tries both of which were
converted to level the score at 26-26.
The Fillies kicked off and secured the
ball Yasmin Matthews took the ball on and made good yardage. From the ruck Megan
West put in a powerful run and off loaded to Parker who supplied Daw to sprint
down the wing to score. The try was unconverted 31-26. The Fillies came
straight back from the kick off taking the ball into H3 territory who for some
reason were awarded a penalty in their 22. H3 kicked out and the ball was loose
on the floor. Parker had the ball covered but was tackled before picking it up
and having been taken out the ball was picked up by H3 who ran down the line
and scored a converted try under the posts. The visitors were now 2 points
ahead.
The Fillies didn’t give up and the last 6 minutes were spent
camped in H3’s 5 metres. New girls Alice Smalley and Lydia Stevenson were both
getting involved on their respective wings ensuring that H3 didn’t break out.
Despite sustained pressure the girls were unable to convert a scrum and two
penalties to points. Eventually H3 scrambled the ball into touch for the final
whistle.
This was a great game to watch with both teams playing in the
spirit that is expected of rugby players. The teams were evenly matched and the
game could have gone either was. Both teams scored 5 tries a piece with H3
adding the extra conversion to win by 2 points
