DUBLIN : MEDIEVAL CHARM ~ GEORGIAN SPLENDOUR . . . an award winning film, pres. & narr. by one of Ireland's best respected documentary film presenters, Cathal O' Shannon. Vikings, Normans, the Church, all are lovingly told in Cathal's superb narration, together with realistic illustrations, capturing the atmosphere of these turbulent periods in Dublin's long history.
Christ Church & St. Patrick's Cathedral, Trinity College - home of the Book of Kells - plus The Custom House, Four Courts and Parliament Buildings. Take a horse and carriage trip around the great Georgian Squares Fitzwilliam and Merrion and feel their history. The rise and fall of Charles Stewart Parnell, Phoenix Park murders of 1882, 1913 workers strike, Howth Gun Running episode culminating in the events of Easter Week, 1916, all shown through a superb collection of photographs courtesy of the various national archives.
In Kilmainham Gaol, Cathal tells the tragic story of Joseph Mary Plunkett, who married Grace Gifford only hours before his execution. The War of Independence, the leadership of Michael Collins, and the Irish Civil war, in Dublin, are also included. Finally, Cathal visits some of Dublin's most famous pubs associated with great Irish writers and relaxes with a pint at Ireland's oldest pub, The Brazen Head Inn, and tells of some famous visitors who frequented it over the centuries. In all, a striking film.

YORK : CITY OF HISTORIC SPLENDOUR . . . is one of England's most historic cities. Narr. by presenter Cathal O'Shannon. The City of York has a history that spans 2000 years. The Romans established a base here in 71 A.D. and York became an important centre of Roman power for more than three centuries. After the Romans, Anglo Saxons ruled for almost 400 years. York was taken over by the Vikings, in turn displaced by Normans, led by William the Conqueror, and 600 years later besieged by Cromwell's forces in 1644. York has survived centuries of turmoil and trauma. See the splendour of York Minster, it's history, the Minster fires of 1829, 1840 and 1984. The Bars and Walls, St. Mary's Abbey. Treasurer's House, Stonegate and The Shambles, the story of Clifford's Tower, the Seige of York, the Georgian period and much more.
We realise the DVD looks out of place here . .. could Vikings be the connection ?! The reason we've included it is because it comes from the same excellent studio as the titles above.
