YORK : CITY OF HISTORIC SPLENDOUR

. . . one of England's most historic cities. Narrated by presenter Cathal O'Shannon.

The City of York has a history that spans over 2000 years. The Romans established a base here in 71 A.D. and York became an important centre of Roman power for more than three centuries. After the Romans, Anglo Saxons ruled for almost 400 years. York was taken over by the Vikings, in turn displaced by Normans led by William the Conqueror, and 600 years later besieged by Cromwell's forces in 1644.

York has survived centuries of turmoil and trauma. See the splendour of York Minster, it's history, the Minster fires of 1829, 1840 and 1984, the Bars and Walls, St. Mary's Abbey, the Treasurer's House, Stonegate and The Shambles, the story of Clifford's Tower, the Seige of York, the elegant Georgian period and much more.

YORKSHIRE AT WAR

. . . from the first Luftwaffe plane to be shot down over England, near Whitby, to dancing in the streets in Bradford on VE-Day. From the blitzed cities of Hull and Sheffield to the fundraising activities in Settle, Bridlington and Beverley. From building Lancasters and tanks in Leeds, to the Land Army working the fields while, beneath them, miners dug for victory.

Yorkshire's contribution to victory in the Second World War cannot be overstated. While their families suffered at home, Yorkshire's servicemen were fighting in all theatres of war. Yorkshire trawlers hunted submarines and swept mines, her merchant seamen risked all on the Murmansk Run and the flat lands of Yorkshire played host to the bomber crews who carried the fight into the heart of Germany. The Free French were billeted in Yorkshire prior to their triumphant return home.
