Shiatsu

Introduction

Shiatsu is a form of holistic massage, or bodywork, that has its origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the historical massage techniques of Japan. Modern Shiatsu is based on these oriental traditions (which go back several thousand years) drawn together with ideas and knowledge from modern disciplines such as physiotherapy and psychology.

Shiatsu can be helpful in the treatment of many ailments, but perhaps has particular success in the area of musculo-skeletal and postural problems. However, it is not just for addressing illness. Shiatsu encourages good posture and breathing, as such it is very useful in actively promoting good health and a sense of well-being.

Shiatsu and Martial Arts

Initially many people express surprise at the idea of there being a link between martial arts and healing arts. In reality, they are simply two sides of the same coin. Ultimately the aim of martial arts is to lead a long and healthy life, and to have a positive effect on those around and society at large. What better way to have a positive effect on others than to actively promote their health and well-being. Shiatsu is only one of many ways that this can be achieved.

The study of martial arts and Shiatsu are also complementary to one another. There is a common body of knowledge that the two share. Study of one can have a beneficial effect on the other. Some specific attributes that are useful to both are:

  • focus
  • flexibility
  • good use of bodyweight
  • good use of the breath to facilitate technique
  • mushin - a state of 'no mind'
  • an experiential understanding of anatomy

    Shiatsu in The Shindo Trust

Shiatsu is not formally a part of the Shindo syllabus. There is no requirement whatsoever for students to study Shiatsu. However, any student wishing to explore this subject further will receive as much support, encouragement and advice as their teacher(s) are able to offer. Within the Trust two teachers are experienced in Shiatsu - Sensei Roger Sheldon has received training in Shiatsu with several teachers, Sensei Mike Flanagan has pursued Shiatsu to a professional level and is a Member of the Register of the UK Shiatsu Society. Mike has a part-time professional Shiatsu practice in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Any student wishing to discuss any aspect of Shiatsu should feel free to speak to their teacher about it. Further information can be gained from Mike's website or the Shiatsu Society.
