On May 7th
1915, the Lusitania steamed along the southern coast of Ireland.
The war that was raging in Europe seemed a world away to those
onboard, but as the Lusitania came level with the Old Head of
Kinsale, she altered course, unwittingly putting herself into
the sights of the German U20. A single torpedo was fired at the
great liner, which exploded just forward of the bridge. A secondary
explosion occurred and she heeled over to starboard. Artist Stuart
Williamson’s dramatic print of the sinking shows the events approximately
ten minutes after she was hit; her propellers lifting clear of
the sea - still revolving, as panic breaks out on the decks above.
Published
to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Lusitania’s tragic loss, the
print is produced in full colour on 300gsm acid-free, silk artboard.
The image size is approx. 418mm x 295mm, (with border 515mm x
410mm).
Stuart
Williamson is the designer of the Lusitania Memorial that
stands on the Old Head of Kinsale. He also joined an expedition
to the Lusitania’s wreck site in 2001.

The wreck
of H.M.H.S. Britannic was discovered by Jacques Cousteau in 1976,
and since then several expeditions have tried to solve the mystery
of her sinking. The television documentary of the 2003 diving
expedition, led by diver Carl Spencer, in association with
the National Geographic, conclusively answered the questions about
the loss of the great liner. In 2003, Carl also dived the wreck
of the R.M.S. Titanic in one of the MIR subs. He was a member
of the team that located and recovered the wreck of Donald Campbell’s
‘Bluebird’ from Coniston Water, and has been wreck diving for
over 18 years. Leigh Bishop is Britain’s foremost deep
shipwreck photographer and has taken stunning photographs of the
wreck of Britannic. Leigh is a prolific wreck diver who has been
involved in previous dives to Britannic and has dived many of
the world’s most famous shipwrecks that include Lusitania, Justicia,
Laurentic and the Wilhelm Gustloff to name just a few.
This stunning
art print by Stuart Williamson is based on careful research and
shows the haunting beauty of the bow of H.M.H.S. Britannic. Printed
on 300gsm Exclusive Silk paper and in full colour, the print measures
515mmx410mm, image size 415mmx297mm (white border is 5cm around
3 sides, 6cm to bottom with a title).
