Completion of a passage of 2-part counterpoint was a common examination question. The trick is NOT to follow the figured bass as if this were a "painting by numbers" exercise. However, neither must your added part contradict the harmony dictated by the figures. Look at this worked example of a piece by Veracini, from his Sonata in F.
