I started this page on 27 August 2004 as a repository for Edexcel A2 materials about the above work. It will not be updated again after August 2005. These resources are in no particular order.
Resource 1 is a worksheet I shall hand out in my first lesson with the A2 students to check they understand basic terms. Download this WORD document it by clicking HERE . It has the answers too.
Resource 2 is a sheet with some general points which I cobbled together last year. Looking at the content, the student and I had covered quite a lot of ground, so this is not a sheet for the early days! Download this WORD document it by clicking HERE.
Resource 3 is a web page about the Classical style given that this work demonstrates several features of it. You'll want to show the extent to which it is also Romantic so go here too.
Resource 4 is a sample answer (?) to a question about the melodic style in the Exposition. It's HERE
Resource 5 HERE concerns the introduction. There is an harmonic analysis (with a midi file) and a few comments of the scoring and material. {Added 13/11/04}
Resource 6 HERE harmonic analysis of the development which can also be downloaded as a WORD file from that page. {Added 14/11/04}
Resource 7 HERE is a document with a couple of possible exam questions. [1] is about the fact that the 1st movement has both an introduction AND a coda. [2] is "Do you think Beethoven should have used more than seven instruments in this movement" a question I would avoid if possible in an exam. Added 14/11/04
Resource 8 HERE is an explanation of the Augmented 6th Chord
Resource 9 consists of a set of tasks which help students to focus on the coda. There is a WORD file and an EXCEL spreadsheet which is also here as a PDF. 'Answers' may appear later!
