Making the Garden - 1981/4 |
|
When we moved to Field Farm in June 1981 there was a very little of the garden that exists today. There were no mature trees apart from a few very old fruit trees and the stumps of elm's which had died earlier of Dutch Elm Disease. We have planted the garden over the intervening time. We have not worked to a fixed plan, because the work has taken place gradually as time and funds would allow, our ideas and experience have changed. We have have however tried to ensure that the garden blends in with the surrounding countryside and encourages birds and wildlife into it by planting areas of native trees and shrubs. The first two or three years were spent planting what is now the South- East Garden and clearing rubble and old foundations to plant the trees (maples, flowering cherries, cedars, and a group of junipers on either side of the drive ; while at the same time working on the house and tidying the outbuildings. |
