Kirk Ireton & Carsington Water |
Kirk Ireton is a small village built of the local gritstone, situated between the towns of Wirksworth and Ashbourne, and now on the shores of Carsington Water. |

The village was listed in the Domesday Book and Holy Trinity Church was probably in existence at that date. The oldest part of the present church dates from 1120 AD. The village pub - The Barley Mow dates from the 17th Century and has been little altered since then. Many of the houses in the village were built at that time. There is a village shop and Post Office , and a school for about forty infant and junior pupils. Carsington water has excellent visitor facilities and birdwatching and sailing are among it's attractions. There are holiday cottages and touring caravan sites in the area. Three other gardens, which are open for the National Garden scheme in the vicinity; Cashel in the village and Riddings farm and Hopton Hall - see the Yellow Book or NGS website for details of their openings |
