A Year in the Garden |

JUNE Over the years we have planted around 200 different roses around the garden. We have kept it all very informal and have used them in various ways - large bushes have been planted in the grass and borders, ramblers scramble over trees and fences and we have numerous patio varieties in containers in the yard. In the large bed on the bottom lawn roses are underplanted with hardy geraniums, stachys byzantina, heuchera and Japanese anemone which sets them off to perfection. The big shrub 'Penelope' has a wonderful perfume which drifts around the garden. We have a small collection of species roses in the rough grass under the field hedge and we have also used other shrub roses to imitate these, and lengthen the flowering season. |
