MILTON KEYNES 1985

1985, The Ramones haven't played in the U.K since 81, they've been dropped by their U.K. record label, but they have got a great new album out 'Too Tough to Die' and plucky independent label 'Beggars Banquet' has picked it up.

They come over and end up playing 4 nights in London and appearing on BBC tv show 'Whistle Test' doing a storming version of chasing the night

A gig is announced at the 90,000 outdoor arena at Milton Keynes bowl and it sells out almost immediately

Of course, most people are there to see the headliners U2, this is1985 and pompous music is in but there is a large gathering there just to see the Ramones

Its show time for the Ramones and the audience at the front changes from folk trying to claim a space to see U2 and their pretentious guitar wank to a seething riot of Ramones fans, jumping out of their skins and having the time of their lives

My mate Paul takes his new kodak 'Disc' camera and cant get it to work at all

Only one picture out of the whole day develops properly, and this is it

They play a cracking set and even slot in the little played Carbona Not Glue, but sadly they don't do 'Bonzo goes to Bitburg' which they've just written as a protest against Nazi loving Ronald Reagan

The next band up are the then practically completely unknown REM, and although they sound good, this is probably the worst slot they ever played in, they can't follow the energy of the Ramones and the crowd are just waiting for U2, who were predictably dull and preaching to the converted

Listen to the Blitzkrieg Bop from the gig
