WebMuseum : Artists and Artworks
- A history of painting with information and paintings by many artists. Use
the Artist Index to find painters quickly. Van Gogh Museum - The Vincent van Gogh museum in Holland. M C Escher - Those famous brain teasing drawings by M.C.Escher. World of Escher - Another good site for Escher's designs. The National Gallery - A good starting point for all art. The site now has very detailed images (needs broadband!) which allow you to pan around a zoomed version of the painting. Clark Art Institute, Massachusetts - The pictures on this site are small and the collections are selective but it's quick to navigate and well organised. Techno Impressionist Art - The site says 'Techno-Impressionism is the last art movement of the 20th Century. The Techno-Impressionist Museum hosts the world's largest collection of Techno-Impressionist art, from the earliest known works to the present.' FunBrain - The Grammar Gorillas
- Go on, take the ADVANCED test, you know you like a challenge! There are some other good activities on this site but beware of American spellings! KS2 spellings - This document shows The Nat. Literacy Strategy guidelines for teachers of words and spelling patterns that should be taught in each term of each year of KS2. The lists of words and notes are, in my opinion, essential reading for pupils and parents! BBC Primary Literacy Activities and Links Page - Activities and Links. Answers.com - Dictionary and encyclopaedia including detailed origins of words. Dictionary.com - English and foreign language dictionary, thesaurus and origins of words. Fullbooks.com - The complete text of many books (presumably out of copyright) including Shakespeare, Dickens, the Bible etc. The home page is a very simple contents page (not even a title!) grouped by book title. UCL English Grammar course - A really in-depth English grammar course aimed at undergraduates - not for the faint-hearted! |

Google Earth
- Need to download (11MB) and install this - also requires XP or W2000. Allows you to pan and zoom around the earth and overlay map data. Google Maps (UK) - This uses the same aerial photos as google earth (which are about 5 years out of date!), works with Windows 98, and doesn't require a download. Multimap - Just type in a place name and you'll get the map. Zoom in by clicking on the map from route planning maps down to street names. Select '1:25,000' in the drop down zoom menu to get the OS 1:50,000 maps! Click on "view aerial photo" to get just that! Old maps of Lancashire - Some interesting maps to download. Up My Street - Type in your postcode and see how nosey the web can be! Ordnance Survey - The Ordnance Survey site. |

Highlights - The British Museum's artifact database
- Just part of the vast British Museum site.
(Romans, Greeks, Egyptians etc.). EgyptiansTheban Mapping Project - A superb 'must-visit' site. The Valley of the Kings has been mapped in 3D. Visit any of the tombs including Tutankhamun's and the recently re-discovered KV5 (the biggest tomb that has not been fully explored yet).Ancient Egypt - British Museum site about various aspects of Ancient Egypt. Virtual Egypt - A rather tacky commercial site but with lots of good photos (see galleries) and information about Ancient Egypt. RomansBBC: Romans - The BBC site about Roman Britain aimed at KS2Who were the Romans - "This web site is aimed at children who are 7-10 years old. The aim is to educate them in a more light-hearted fashion." Roman Britain - A vast collection of resources about Roman Britain including detailed maps, fort plans, photographs etc. Roman Britain - by Guy de la Bedoyere - A really 'in-depth' site by that posh bloke off Channel 4's Timeteam. Lots of reading matter (if somewhat heavy going) and some links to other sites/articles. The Romans: Ksar Bshir - In the middle of the desert in Jordan is a Roman Fort. Hard to reach, and virtually untouched (except for the odd earthquake), it is one on the best examples of a Roman Fort untouched by man since it was abandoned. Here is someone's personal trip report. BBC: WW2 - The BBC site about the Second World War. Holnet: History of London - The Blitz (and Victorian London) WW2 - The Freckleton Tragedy - 23rd August 1944, The war is progressing well after D-Day; the allies capture Paris. But on the home front, near Preston, a US bomber on a test flight from the USAF airbase at Warton is caught in a terrible thunderstorm and crashes into the heart of Freckleton village. This is the air incident report. |

Maths is Fun
- Lots of activities and games based on mathematics. Some take a while to download. Maths Zone - Links to hundreds of activities, worksheets and sites Donna Young resources - Number squares and other resources to print out. The clocks page is also useful. An American site (hence 'math') with some other subject areas, but much of it is not relevant to the UK curriculum. Maths Investigations - An EduWeb page of puzzles - some fairly easy and some tricky - but all thought provoking. |

San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Children's guide
A Good fun introduction to the orchestra with pictures and sounds. Music lab section introduces temp, rhythm, pitch, harmony, notation etc. Pre-School Rhymes and Songs Words an actions to pre-school rhymes and songs. Duchess at Home - Songs Words and quite nice MIDI music backing tracks to nursery rhymes and songs. Music files may open in Windows Media Player so you have to click back on web site page to see words! KIDiddles Words for childrens hymns and songs along with rather tacky MIDI backing tracks! This take you to the list of all the songs on the site - it's a rather long page! 8 notes A commercial site but there is plenty of free music available for most instruments in GIF (picture), SIBELIUS (you need the program), MIDI (hear the tune) and PDF (for printing) formats. Pieces are usefully graded for difficulty as well. Free Piano Music Aimed at those learning the piano this site has plenty of sheet music which is graded for difficulty (US style!). Also has a few duet pieces. Werner Ickling sheet music archive Need sheet music for your string/woodwind quartet - look no further! Classical music mainly in PDF format. FreeSheetMusic.net Some free music (mainly classical) in GIF or PDF format (often in a ZIP file). Also links to other web sites. SheetMusicArchive.net Music in PDF format, mainly classical, extensive choice. You're limited to 2 downloads per day though (so I haven't tried many!) |

Channel 4 Science
- Channel 4's science essentials aimed at KS2. BBC science clips - Interactive animations of science principles. You do the experiment (online with no mess!) and you can then be quizzed on your results. They can take a while to download though! Active Science - Interactive site with selective aspects of science. NASA Starchild site - NASA site aimed at children Hubble Space Telescope site - The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) site. |

- An Australian site with ideas for making toys, paper planes etc at home plus some links to other sites.
Some ideas, the mouse trap powered car for example, may not be suitable for younger children! How cams work - An excellent little introduction to cams. |

- Rules and ideas for hundreds of children's activity games. Teaching ideas - PE - Aimed at teachers but the hundreds of PE and games should be useful for parents at party time. PE Lesson Plan Ideas - More activities aimed at teachers (but US based) - quality varies a lot. |

A very useful site full of links to UK museums 'Station X' - Bletchley Park - The secret headquarters of UK intelligence during WW2 where the world's first computer, Colossus, was built to crack the the Enigma codes. National History Museum - Dinosaurs are the favourite here but it's not the best organised of sites and images are often poor. The Eden Project, Cornwall - The world famous Eden Project which consists of huge glass domes containing tropical plants from around the world.
