Plas Newydd was the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby (The Ladies of Llangollen) from 1780 to 1831.
They became associated with fashionable intellectual trends of the time and lived ‘in retreat’ from the world. They gothicised their home, incorporating a jigsaw of oak carvings and added stained glass windows.
Today, Plas Newydd is presented as a series of period rooms. The house and grounds are at present being developed and plans include an education room, improved visitor facilities and the recreation of gardens.
