Chinese students in the city of Chengdu have written to President Clinton apologising for the accidental destruction of the American consulate in that city :

We, the students in Chengdu, hereby sincerely express our deep sorrow to the US government. We have been participating in a rubbish-clearing exercise over the past few days, and wanted to burn some trash.
But because of outdated intelligence, we burned your consulate by mistake. The Chengdu city map of 1972 shows that your consulate location was a rubbish dump.

This accident was caused by inaccurate information and faulty operation. Please trust us, it was not our intention to burn your consulate. We look forward to a good relationship between us in the future.

However, we still have to deepen and extend on our rubbish-clearing campaign. We will try our best to avoid such accidents happening again, and we apologise for this terrible and tragic mistake.

Yours, etc
