Reporting the war in Kosovo

The National Executive of the NUJ passed this motion on 22 May:

The NEC condemns the abuse of human rights by the Yugoslav authorities, the murder and intimidation of journalists and the closure of independent media.

The NEC equally condemns NATO's decision to attack media and other civilian targets.

The NEC calls on all governments to desist from all acts of censorship and manipulation of the media and expresses its full support for fair reporting and free speech throughout the Balkans.

The NEC endorses the setting up of the "Campaign for Media Accuracy and Free Speech on War" to highlight the need for accurate media coverage of the war.

The NEC supports the IFJ campaign to provide humanitarian relief and support for media workers affected by the conflict and its appeal to raise the funds needed to provide this support."
