By Bus from Sliema

One of the highlights of a holiday in Malta is to travel around and see the sights and no better way to do this than to go by bus. Our favourite place to stay is Sliema and there is a good selection of routes to choose from.

Route Buses to and from Sliema (Ferries)

The bus starts from Sliema Ferries and heads along Tower Road with views of The Mediterranean Sea on the right, passing The Independence Gardens, The Exiles, then on through Balluta Bay to Spinola Bay, St. Julians then turning left onto The Sliema Regional Road, through The Sun Yat Sen Tunnel and off through San Gwann. The next stop is Naxxar and very soon the Dome of St. Marys Chuch at Mosta comes into view. After passing through Mosta we head along through Ta'Qali for the Craft Village, the view of Mdina standing high in the distance brings us climbing up into Rabat where the bus terminates. It is a short walk through the gardens to Mdina.

This bus runs along the same roads as far as St. Julians. It continues along the rugged coast road past Bahar-Ic-Caghaq with magnificent views of the sea, past Salina and The Kennedy Memorial Park, then on through St. Pauls Bay, Xemjia and up the hill to Mellieha, then down the zig-zag road to Ghadira and on over the hill to Cirkewwa where the Ferry to Gozo can be caught.

Bus and Ferry animation

This animation shows a Malta Route bus with two passengers travelling on Route 645 from Sliema Ferries to Cirkewwa, then the two passengers board the ferry bound for Mgarr, Gozo where a Gozo bus on Route 25 whisks them to Victoria. If the buses and ferry are not working please wait until the page has fully loaded then services will be operating regularly.

Route 652 to GHAJN TUFFIEHA travels the same route as far as St. Pauls Bay then passes along the fertile Pwales Valley to terminate at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay. On one occasion my Wife and I walked from the bus terminus through the countryside, past St. Joseph's Church at Manikata and on to Mellieha. The scenery and wild flowers that we saw were magnificent.

Routes 64, 66, 67 and 68 travel beyond Sliema to BALLUTA BAY, SPINOLA BAY and St. JULIANS

By travelling from Sliema to GZIRA, MSIDA, SA. MAISON, FLORIANA, and VALLETTA on a route 61, 62, 63, 64, 66, 67 or 68 bus it is then possible to connect with routes at City Gate Bus Station, Valletta that go to most parts of the island.

When in Malta or Gozo it is advisable to purchase the latest copy of The Malta Bus Map.
