NEW - May 2011: Page Two Skeg re-shaping and new Becker Rudder

Model Scale: 1:42
Hull Material: Scratch Built using Plank on Frame technique ( See My Hull Building Page )
Plan: 'Plan MM 1393 - from 'Model Boats Magazine' plans service (handled by: My Hobby Stores) and from other sources.
(Link to My Hobby Stores on my Link Page Plans section.
Model Length: 1006 mm (39-3/4")
Build Time: 220 hours to May 2009
Progress: Pictures as of May 2009

Propulsion: Single screw. Bow and stern Thrusters, Becker Rudder
Electrics: 1 Electric motor, Electronize speed controllers for motor + one for each thruster
Notes: As the hull is of a good size I intend to have working fire monitors, radars turning and working navigation lights.
Also both bow and stern tunnel thrusters will work and the Becker rudder will operate as the real unit.
Although 'Grampian Pride' also has a bow mounted azimuthing thruster (drop down type) I only intend having this feature as a static unit (when model is on display) which will be removed when on the water.

A special thanks goes to: Gerry, Jim, Charlie, James and David for their help with my research.

Grampian Pride Hull being Built  Hull frame being planked.
Bow being Made    Bow being built from Balsa Wood, to form a solid block.
Bow being Covered Soft Balsa wood block covered with thin ply to give a harder surface.
Hull Shape   Hull ready for internal covering with GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic).
Hull after Basic Shaping Hull after covering with GRP inside and out, shaping, filling and priming with a filler primer.
The tube projecting from the keel is for the non working azimuthing thruster.
Building Bulwarks On Grampian Pride the bulwarks start on the top edge of the HULL not on the deck as normal.
I kept the thin ply hull edging proud to enable the bulwark to be formed,
using thin styrene sheet the ply has been lined and shaped.
This will enable me to fix the rest of the bulwark easily.
Bulwarks Underway With the inside of the hull/bulwark lined the remaining bulwark section is being fitted,
there is a horizontal ledge part way up the bulwark.
Decks Fitted Both decks fitted, cut out in side for Rescue Ramp. Bow bulwarks being made,
all hull portholes and anchor tubes fitted (as of end of November 2001)
