Commission Module

Module 22: Commissioned Artwork

Description of Module: In this module the student will contract, commission and execute a range of work through seeking out, meeting and making contracts with private or public clients. Students will demonstrate and agree approaches to work and expected outcomes. They will carry out the work accordingly to the contract in order to realise agreed outcomes, and will evaluate outcomes in discussion with the client.

For this module I stumbled upon a client who required a painting of their three children together with their cousin. All to be executed and timely delivered as a Christmas present to the children's grandmother.

I followed the module instructions and wrote a letter to the client setting out the terms of such a commission, a price and delivery. The estimated delivery was 4 weeks.

I visited the children on three occassions taking photos and making sketches, and finally digitally set out the pose and size I envisaged. This was 30" x 20" acrylic on canvas. The customer agreed this proposal and painting commenced on 5th December. I then painted on 6th, 12th and 13th December completing it and matt varnishing it that evening.

My conclusions were that I had met the agreed outcomes, I was 2 days early from the quoted 4 weeks and the customer was delighted with the outcome. The customer had also shared in the evolution of the work.

My conclusions also analysed the time taken and it was surprising that the whole took 40 hours with the actual painting time being 20 hours. If anyone had asked I would have put the painting time as much more than the organisational time before I started.
