My
first decent sized job, and still quite a reasonable
project when I look back on it today.Under the watchful eye of my supervising engineer, Roman Kosiba, I carried out all the structural design for this refurbishment while still a student on industrial placement. The existing theatre had undergone a number of transformations in the past. We found evidence of boxes revealed by the ends of old steelwork buried inthe walls. Most recently a second theatre had been created by blocking off the seating under the balcony. Our brief was to improve the interior by taking out the existing ground and first floors, and to form three new theatres and a retail floor in their place. For speed of construction we used a steel frame and precast planks. Bored mini piles were used to support the new structure in the soft alluvial clays |
