I was called in as a "trouble shooter" after the project had gone to tender. We had been asked to make a number of design changes, and in addition we were concerned that the design as it stood could not be built. The Architect was very talented and enthusiastic but lacked experience in this sort of building. On close inspection it turned out that the complex roof geometry simply didn't fit together. We were very tightly constrained as tenders were already in however we managed to solve the geometric problems while at the same time increasing the covered area by 20%, improving ventilation, changing from an all welded to bolted construction for ease of erection, and improving the aesthetics of the connections. In spite of these late changes we actually managed to reduce the cost of the structural works by simplifying the external works. |
