George Harold Clifft was born on 7 February 1897 in Low Street, Cheslyn
Hay, Staffordshire. His father was Charles Clifft, Caol Miner, and his
mother was Eliza Ann Clifft formerly Heafield. E A Clifft - mother
registered the birth on 9 March 1897. The birth was registered in the
Registration District of Cannock, in the Sub-District of Cannock.
George Harold was baptised at the Parish Church of Great Wyrley on
7 March 1897, the son of Charles and Eliza Ann Clifft of Cheslyn Hay.
His father was a miner.
1918: Married at Dore. He was nearly 21, but declared his age as 27,
adding 6 years to his age, while Doris was 32, and also admitted to 27.
He was a Sapper R.E. resident at Redmires Camp, Fullwood, Sheffield.
He listed his father as Charles Cliffe, Miner. Witnesses were Thomas
Samuel Drury and Jennie Copestake

Living at 94 Buttermere Road. GHC and Doris were listed. Note
that (1) gives the occupant as Mrs Emily Adams in 1924-6. GHC was not at
Buttermere Rd in the Spring 1923 Roll.
1927-8: (1) GHC was living at 10 Molloy Place, Meersbrook. His occupation was
journeyman timsmith. Next door at No 8, lived William Alexander Bridges, an
engraver. GHC was not living there in 1926, although Bridges was.

In 1932/3 there was a Fredk. Woodrow at the same address.
1931,1933-4: (1) Living at 10 Molloy Place, occupation bus driver in 1931 & 1933. In
1934, his occupation was 'car driver'..
1934/5: (3) 10 Molloy Place. Electors GHC + Doris + Shelah Cliffe + George
Davies [BDW recalls that Shalah was engaged to George Davies, but doesn't
recall himm living with them]. Harold George Bridges was living at No 8
during all these years (1928-35).
1935/6: (3) 10 Molloy Place. Electors GHC, Doris, Shelah. Harold Bridges had
gone from No 8.
1936-7: (1) Living at No 1 Essendine Crescent, Sheffield. Occupation, brake
fitter.
1977: George Harold Cliffe died on 13 September 1977 in a Local Authority
Old Peoples home at 501 Lowedges Crescent, Sheffield. He died of heart
failure. His death was reported by Barbara Dorothea Wager, his daughter,
who gave his date of birth as 1895. George Harold had added two years to
his age at some time and never given it up!
The Clift/Clifft/Cliff/Cliffe spelling was quite flexible up until the
mid-19C. Then you can see the different spellings hardening within different
branches of the family. The curates registering their births had trouble,
and there are references to 'Clift alias Cliff' and so on.
