Class CXA sheep trucks
| The
CXA class sheep trucks were a development of the CX class.
The principal difference in the first vehicles built was
the 9'-6" wheelbase 16'-0" steel underframe. Later wagons were conversions of C and CX class wagons and retained the wooden underframe. The steel framed CXA's were built over a period of eighteen years as follows: |

Rebuilds of C and CX class wagons from 1933 were to the CXA standard but on GC type wooden underframe. A there was little difference between a CX and a wooden framed CXA it is possible that the 1953 reclassifications had been rebuilt some time previously.

None of the CXA's was written off before the Second World War but the arrival of the new CXB class wagons started the reduction in numbers. Many of the steel underframed wagons were rebuilt to other classes:

In 1974 eighty-five wagons were marked "Midland - Robbs Jetty Area Only". The renumbering problem with 8276/367/364 noted in the official records shows the problem of interchange of identity between wagons. This comes up again with the conversion of 7434 to class HE. This MUST have been a steel framed wagon at the time of conversion and it seems likely that it had either swapped identities with one of the steel framed batch or been completely rebuilt at some point.
