Class JA water tankers, JP class petrol tankers, JX class Bitumen tankers

The second class to use the JA classification were a group of 2800 gallon water tankers built on the GC type chassis. The total of eighty-one wagons was constructed as follows:

1925 - 10289-10308

1928 - 10976-10983, 11104-11108

1929 - 1509, 2667, 3723, 11109-11128

During this period some of these wagons were hired out to the oil companies and used to transport petrol. For this traffic they were fitted with a special manhole cover and reclassified JP. The wagons involved were:

From 1933 numbers 10300, 11104, 11112 and 11117 were used as poison tanks for the weed-killing train. Wagons known to have been used at some time for this traffic also include 1509, 2667, 10290, 10300/6/7, 10977/8, 10980/2, 11104/7, 11111/2/4/7, 11121/6. From 1935 to 1938 numbers 10299 and 10308 were used as residual oil tankers whilst 11119 was used as a rail washer.

In 1937 a variant on the JA design appeared when the final batch of ten wagons were turned out with all steel underframes. They were numbered 672/4, 682, 699, 1254, 1404, 1457, 1485, 1491, 1582. Another group of conversions started in 1939 when two wagons were converted to bitumen tankers and reclassified JX. The conversions and fate of the JX's were as follows:

1939

655, 10976 to JX

As steam declined the requirement for water tankers fell and so the JA's were withdrawn. Withdrawal of the remaining JA class wagons was as follows:
