Classes GS, GST and GSW
|
This class of 250 wagons was built between 1935 and 1942 by Midland workshops. These paired the GC body with a new type of steel underframe and followed on from the steel underframe version of the GC class. This new underframe for the first time on a W.A.G.R. four -wheeled wagon dispensed with solebars and relied on heavy side-sills. |

Two wagons seem to have become accident victims in their early years with 260 being written off in 1953 and 9678 the following year although 9678 was written back in 1959. A significant problem with these wagons was the steel floor and from 1959 when the steel floor of these wagons need replacing new timber floors were fitted and the wagons reclassified GST. 146 wagons were converted to GST were as follows: |

One wagon (5022) was converted into a
JGS class tanker in 1963 and another (8726) was converted to a JGH class tanker in 1964. A more radical conversion to GSW class grain hoppers began in 1963:|

GSW5021 Photo Joe Moir
The photos above show typical GSWs although the prototype wagon (318) was rather different and did not have a hopper bottom. I am unsure if it was converted to match the others. This class is another example where a more logical and consistent use of the classification system would have put these wagons in the "L" group with the other four-wheeled hoppers.
In 1972 five wagons were converted back from GST to GS (261, 2279, 2345, 8058, 9562) and in the same year write-offs of the remaining GS class wagons started.
