This class of wagons was built specifically to handle Ilmenite. In 1976 XE24441-24491 were placed in service.
In 1983 24441/2/7/8, 24451/3/9, 24462/6/7, 24473, 24483/6/7 were fitted with Vacuum bypass pipes and reclassified XEB.
A further batch XE24492-6 were built in 1987 followed by a final groupXE24436-24440 in 1991.
