Review - Spanish American War Figures from Old Glory - by George B. Chambers

I purchased a pack of the Spanish American War Cuban Insurrecto Infantry and these figures I liked a LOT!

The pack broke down as follows:

Two officers in tunic and trousers both in the same pose, pointing with one hand and carrying a machete in the other.
Each officer had a different head.

Next, two buglers in tunic and trousers. Both of these were identical.

Then two standard bearers. Both of these figures were the same but had different heads.

There were five different soldiers in the following poses:

Advancing with Trapdoor Springfield in trousers and sleevless jacket.
Standing firing Martini Henry in tunic and trousers.
Kneeling firing a bolt action rifle I couldn't identify but which could be a Lee Metford (it looked like it had a box magazine next to the trigger guard).
Standing loading a Trapdoor Springfield in shirt and trousers.
Running with Spanish Mauser in jacket and trousers (the jacket looked a lot like an ACW sack coat.

Most of the figures have very light equipment, e.g. a waist belt with one ammo pouch or just a breadbag and the overall look of the figures is suitably ragged. There are a variety of head variants wearing either battered straw or slouch hats and at least one head has clearly "negro" features. Many of the hats have tiny Cuban flags on them (yes you can actually tell its a CUBAN flag thanks to the quality of the sculpting!). Overall I would rate these figures at 7.5 out of 10. The fact that some of the heads on my figures seemed to be at odd angles was the only thing which let the figures down.

While at the Old Glory Stand at "Claymore" (Wargames show in Edinburgh on the 7th August '99) I also got a look at the Spanish American War US marines. They are in the early war uniform with the 1898 forage cap and look very like the marines in the colour plate in the Brassey's SAW uniforms book. Unfortunately I couldn't compare them with the Boxer Rebellion US marines as they had sold out by the time I got to the show. I also saw the Italian Bersaglieri from the Boxer range and was impressed by what I saw. The figures seemed to match the illustration of a Bersaglieri in the Osprey Boxer Rebellion book. I would probably rate both packs at 7.5 out of 10. Overall, the Boxer Rebellion European figure packs seemed to be selling very well. The show opened at 10am and by 2pm most packs had gone.
