FCC = FAMILY CARAVAN AND CAMPING club

Welcome to the Family Caravan and Camping (FCC) side to your number one Scout Centre. At least once a month we are out enjoying the UK in either a caravan or tent. We use a variety of sites from either the Caravan Club in the winter months for the hardened Caravaners to Camping & Caravan Club sites spring, summer and early autumn as well as numerous commercial sites during the summer months. All are welcome to join the FCC we publish the sites to book here on this page. Just look out for the cartoon pictures of either a Tent, Caravan or both. You then book in at the site under your own name and membership number, where applicable. You will then know that there are others from 1PSC at the site. Many of the sites booked are arranged around the FHG (see above) so if you aren't into hiking you'll have to do your own thing in the day of the hike. It's an informal gathering you come and go as you please. Usually some of the FCC socialize during the evening, others don't, you suit yourselves, no one is offended. Welcome to 1PSC, we lead, others follow!

Meet in the car park that runs along the side of the river, up stream from Bolton Abbey. There is a car fee for the day so take some dosh, there are toilets there . Meet near the foot bridge for 10:00 The hike cover most types of terrain from gentle footpaths to a little scrambling, it can get slippy so there is a chance of the odd slip so extra car is needed in those areas.

Beacause this hike runs along the side of a river the actual route might change for safety reason.

Suitable for older Beavers, Cubs & Scouts.

Hike 1
Hole of Horcum, 5 miles
Date
6 January 2007
Risk
Medium / Low
Difficulty
Easy

COMMENTS It was a dull foggy start as we all arrived, some later than others I know! But it soon gave way to blue skies as we arrived a Dunsdale Pond. The path wasn't as muddy as expected so we made good time to the start of the only hill on this short hike. I've been using this hill for some years to judge what levels of fitness everyone is, this year everyone kept together not much to work on. I'm now looking forward to the next gathering!

Adults enjoy their Picnic before we head off over open fields to start our climb out of the Hole of Horcum. The young people enjoyed theirs a little closer to the babbling brook (not you PB)

COMMENTS A steady hike for all, some quit early though however all took full advantage of crisp winters days with blue skies. The hike started from the Brown Cow in Ackworth and skirted around Ackworth. The paths were muddy but all had pleasant time with a traditional drink to finish off in the Brown Cow Public House. Well that's it for the steady hikes, we now start the more challenging hikes

Suitable for Beaver Scout ages plus

Hike 3

Peak District, Baslow-Chatsworth 9 miles

Date
Saturday 17 March
Risk
Low to Medium
Difficulty

COMMENTS: Baslow is a busy little village, situated in the Derwent Valley, with Chatsworth Park to the south and Baslow Edge rising to the north. Nowadays, the Devonshire Bridge, built shortly after the First World War, carries most of the traffic across the river. But it is the Old Bridge, close to the church built in 1603, which attracts most interest from visitors with its impressive stone arches; it is the only bridge across the Derwent never to have been destroyed by floods.

Above: FHG set off after a safety chat in Baslow. (Below) JB making the early stages of the hike look easy.

A mild day with plenty sun after a grey start, but all relaxed into a good hiking pace as we skirted the grounds of Chatsworth House and headed into the hills. The hill took it's toll on some as the gap between the quicker and not so quick grew. But after a short detour we all made the top in good time to sit in warm sunshine to enjoy the views and a well earned lunch break.

Meet the FHG Girls!

Was suitable for Cub Scouts, Scouts & Explorers

Explorer Scouts find the hike easy, but "Skip" promises more of a challenge the next time out at Nidderdale, even though they failed to beat the dads to the top of the 2 mile hill!.

Comments:

What can I say but this is one of my top ten hikes, I love Nidderdale, it's the unspoilt part of the Yorkshire Dales just a short 20 minute drive from Patley Bridge. This hike has a nice climb half way through, you'll need to take along a packed lunch and a drink. The weather couldn't have been better, we even had to borrow sun lotion. Blue Skies and a hard hike what more is there to life?

Each of the Hikers had to take charge of the hike and took there turn navigating. We also made the traditional stop for a well earned pint once the hike was over.

FCC Starting off the camping season many of the hikers made a full bank holiday weekend of it. A shorter hiker the following day into Pateley Bridge to pick up provisions for the planned comunal BBQ later that night. Below MF,NB & SB getting the BBQ lit

Comments:

This event was a strictly a Free & Easy weekend, nothing was planned apart from the trip into Whitby to enjoy the Goth weekend. Some hiked from the site others went into Robin Hoods bay before catching the bus into Whitby to meet up with the rest of us for a pub lunch. Saturday evening was a communal BBQ as we sat outside and enjoyed the pleasant evening sunshine. However as the sun went down so did the temperatures and and many too tired after a busy day so an early night was on the cards for many of the campers. Whitby was very busy and we felt in the minority at teh Spa Pavillion not dressed up. So this October we are planning to do it all over again, however we will be Goths for the day too. Ark's FCC Rating 8/10 (New clean toilet block) This is a commercial site split in half by a small country road. From our caravan we enjoyed the scenery, with ample electric. The campers also enjoyed a flat field which was easy to peg out the tents. There was a mobile catering van that served everything from breakfasts throughout to dinners at a reasonable cost. I'll use the site again this year.

WARTIME WEEKEND on the North Yorkshire Railway at Pickering is on 12th, 13th, 14th October. 2007. The weekend begins with the ceremonial flag raising on Friday, and continues until it is lowered again on Sunday afternoon. All the stations from Grosmont to Pickering are dressed with wartime signs, notices, sandbags and taped up windows, and re-enactors are everywhere, showing how life was during the war years. On Saturday, there is a parade in Pickering, and in the evening, a superb dinner dance, complete with NAAFI canteen and Glen Miller type orchestra. Also on Saturday the highly acclaimed ‘Sentimental Journey’ will be performing at the Working Men's Club in Pickering . For further information visit the web site at: http://nymr.co.uk/events/2007-events

This is a new event for us so I can't say much other than I know it's a biggy. The village of Pickering is turned into a world war 2 military zone with many World War 2 enthusiasts parading and driving around in period equipment. Glen miller dances are going on (That's Maureen and I taken care of!). As yet we are to decide where to stay. It's likley to be a CL site, Ann & Maureen will let me know the site soon soon. And yes, we do intend to get dressed up in period civillian costumes to make it feel right (Excuse for a few more beers I think!)

Comments:

We intend to repeat the brilliant weekend we had late April this year when we went for the Goth weekend to Whitby. The group of seventeen all enjoyed the weekend so much that it was decided to return for the final Goth Weekend of the year at Whitby, and go as Goths ourselves not just the kids. It was obvious when we were there in April there isn't an age limit to joining in so we know we aren't going to look odd. So if seventeen of us are going to join in why don't you too.

Once you've booked in please let us know if you want us to book you on a our mini bus to take you to Whitby at lunch time, then be picked up later in the evening after a beer or too. There will be a cost per seat to pay us before you go!

FCC

This is the last chance for those in tents to join us as the winter months start to move in, so this is the last commercial campsite of the year for the FCC, the rest will either be Caravan club sites or Camping and caravan Club sites. This site we've already used a coupleof times this year. I hope you'll all join us on this final big camp for 2007.
