Luxury Coach Travel

It was 5:40 on a cold but bright summer’s morning when 1PSC Scouts and their families started to gather at Friarwood Car park for the start of our France 2006 Summer Expedition. It was the end of a years fundraising by all the Scouts and families that saw up to £150 deduction in the cost for those that were able to attend all the events to lower the costs.

The coach had arrived the night before so was sat there waiting, the impressive 84 seater double deck coach had all the modern facilities to ensure the Scouts and leaders arrived as fresh as they could later that day. It didn’t take long to collect the passports and the E111 before we were off. For some parents it was a tearful departure like the first day at School. For the Scouts it was time to "Start the Adventure" The journey down to Dover didn’t seem to take long, we had a couple of stops one to stretch our legs and the other for Lunch, which was a "Big Mac" . After lunch with a couple of hours travelling left before we hit Dover, a Harry Potter film was shown and by the time it finished we’d arrived  early and were able to catch an earlier crossing.

"The Pride of Canterbury" took a little over an 1½ half which gave time for a little freedom for the Scouts and Explorers to do some exploring by themselves after a safety chat. The cub Scouts were also given time to roam the P&O Ferry under the supervision of their assigned leader so nobody had the chance to get bored.

The crossing was calm, and although instructions were given not to spend all of the their UK money in the shop, it fell on death ears for some as they returned with piles of sweets for there secret midnight feast later that night.

Our journey to the Chateau was a pleasant ride that took almost and hour and half, but the sun was shining it was warm and the Chateau staff lined up to greet us as we arrived. Free time for all under the supervision of the Explorers while the leaders had a meeting to finalise the eating times with the Kitchen staff. Sam was our representative for the duration of our stay and would also act as the translator for us on the planned activities. The meeting took only a short time and soon the Scouts were all ushered onto the playing fields for either a game of football, volleyball or rounders. It was great way to burn off energy and gave everyone the chance to explore the grounds of this impressive House.

We headed off for our first excursion to the subteranian city.

This was a great hit, an underground city that once housed over 2000 people whilst war reigned above ground.

Afterwards we had time to wander the grounds, meeting some of the animals.

Azincourt was the next day's excursion, along with a visit to the site where the V1 rockets "flying bombs" were launched against London during the second world war

Day three was pure fun, with a visit to Aqualud, but unfortunately due to rules and regs, we were unable to take photographs in the swimming pool. But if you ask all of the Cubs. Scouts and Explorers, they will tell you all about the wicked slides, both inside and out.

This was followed by an afternoon on the beach, as no trip is compete without a trip to the seaside.
