Always on the lookout for ideas to freshen up this site, I asked Bobby to come up with his all time best Whitburn team.
Bobby is a long time Whitburn supporter, and being just a bit older than me (I won't say how much older), I felt he would be able to go back further and encompass more players.Bobby is a member of the Football Club committee and a former President of the Supporters Club.
If anyone has their own favourite all-time team, send me details on an e-mail, with reasons for your selections, and I will add it to the site.
Here is Bobby's contribution.
In order to preserve the present team’s dignity and my diminishing reputation I have limited the selection to players from the past era, but will agree that a few could make an appearance, and if pressed to name them will deny it.All teams must have a basic structure and my team will be based on a 3-4-3 formation.
Goalkeeper
Bobby Hodge
Capped for Scotland in 67-68 and again in 68-69 is my choice for the number 1 position.
Defence
A very difficult selection to make for these positions and several outstanding defenders, some internationalists, have unfortunately been omitted.
Derek Currie
A great left-sided defender who played in the sixties and early seventies and would be suited to the modern game.John Corrigan
Centre half capped for Scotland in 72, the outstanding player who would possibly feature in all the selections made in Whitburn.George Fairley
Completes the back line. An outstanding player, sweeper and right-sided defender for Whitburn over a fourteen year period, and cannot be excluded.
Midfield
Carlo Crolla
The right-side midfield player, with his surging runs and strength, would cause problems for any defence. A player from the eighties and nineties.Gordon Wilson
The left-sided midfield player from the mid-eighties era, although he was actually right-footed.Alex McAllister
The outstanding football player to wear the club colours in the sixties, and arguably since the club was founded in 1934. A member of the 1966 Scottish Cup team which took the club to the final for the first time in its history. The first player to be selected for my greatest eleven, and the ballplayer of the central midfield duo.For balance, defensive, tackling, ballwinning and holding role in midfield I've chosen Evan Balfour, the outstanding nominee for this position from the 89 and 90 team, who’s energy was second to none, and with Evan in the position, allows a defensive back three and an attacking team selection.
Forwards
Danny Kilpatrick
Another player from the 1966 Cup Finalists and the club's leading goalscorer of all time. Danny could score goals from anywhere and in every way, from bumbled shots to spectacular efforts, and always remarked that any goal only counts as one.Alongside Danny up front I've chosen Jim[Doxy]Docherty, from the team's early to mid eighties era, who scored for fun 40+ goals each season, and remember with awe his spectacular individual goal in the East of Scotland Centenary Cup Final against Linlithgow at Tynecastle.
Last but not least I've chosen a player who was deceptively good in the air, fast on the ground, who can play in all front positions, from the team of 1989.
Robert Scott.
Before turning senior, Scottie’s contribution was superb and he destroyed Renfrew Juniors in the Scottish almost single-handed, in the first half of that game.

CROLLA BALFOUR McALLISTER WILSON
SCOTT
DOCHERTY KILPATRICK
Well there you are my greatest team to challenge the best, but regret that I had to omit loads of outstanding contenders for places, like Jocky Robertson in goal, Andy Muir in defence, Murphy and Duncan outstanding wingers, but even Alf Ramsey had no place in his team for Jimmy Greaves so,
COME ON THE BURNIE!
