Doug and Al Brown cup final
Whitburn 4 Newtongrange 1 Scorers - McGlynn(2), Hannah, Taylor
Whitburn won this game, the last of the season, comfortably to win the
Brown cup for the first time since season 1972-73, although it was midway
through the second half before the first goal was scored.
Newtongrange failed to bring a save out of goalkeeper Walker during
the first half, while Whitburn came close on several occasions. McGlynn
headed narrowly over from a corner, then Hannah had the ball in the net
after 20 minutes but was ruled offside. A couple of minutes later McGlynn
saw his shot saved after being set up by MacKenzie. Ten minutes from half
time, MacKenzie hit a shot of the outside of the post, then a short time
later, Taylor saw his effort saved by the keeper.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Newtongrange 0
The second half was much like the first with Whitburn dominating and
Walker having little to do in goal.
Several early chances were created before Whitburn made the breakthrough
their play deserved in the 63rd minute. Kenny Hannah ran on to a
through ball from Haddow and his shot beat the advancing keeper. A few
minutes later, Hannah had to be replaced when he cut his hand after falling
at the side of the park
McGlynn scored the second after 70 minutes when he headed home
a cross from Gilmour.
A few minutes later, Newtongrange substitute Finlayson was sent off
after a second booking, having only been on the park for a matter of minutes,
but the ten men pulled a goal back from the spot after Clouston had given
away a penalty.
Davy McGlynn headed against the crossbar then in the 82nd minute McGlynn
made it 3-1 after he lobbed the keeper, having again been set up by MacKenzie.
With 5 minutes remaining Paul Taylor made it 4-1 when he beat
the keeper with a shot from wide on the left of the park.

Whitburn 0 Bathgate 1
Bathgate almost scored in the opening minutes following a cross from
the right, which was missed by 2 inrushing attackers with Whitburn struggling
to cover.
Whitburn went forward and came close through Gilmour, who picked up
a punched clearance by keeper Balfour, and hit a shot just over.
Five minutes from half time Bathgate hit the bar with a diving header
from the left back from 15 yards, following another deep cross from the
right.
McGlynn laid the ball back from the goal line for Hannah who cut inside
and hit a low shot, which was only partly stopped by Balfour. As the ball
spun under him and towards the line, he recovered to prevent the opener.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Bathgate 0
Whitburn created several half chances without really threatening the
Bathgate goal, but for most of the game the two Whitburn forwards failed
to get the type of service that they are well capable of converting into
goals.
Bathgate scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute following
a corner from the left. It was swung into the middle of the six yard box,
where the tall Simpson headed home.
The centre half of Bathgate should have extended their lead soon after
this when he got clear, but he hit his shot too early from outside the
box and couldn't find the target.
It was only after going behind that Whitburn showed any sense of urgency,
but they were unable to find the equaliser and Bathgate won their first
trophy since winning this same cup in season 1959-60

Linlithgow 0 Whitburn 0 (no extra time - Whitburn win 4-1 on penalties)
This game was Bruce Clouston's 400th for the club.
Whitburn, showing a much more determined attitude,
gained revenge for Saturday's defeat by progressing to meet Newtongrange
in the final next week.
Kevin Craig came close with a volley from the
edge of the box that went narrowly past the post with keeper McPherson
rooted to the spot.
Stuart Walker had to be alert when a Linlithgow
player broke into the right of the box, rushing from his line to block
the shot with his feet.
Half time: Linlithgow 0 Whitburn 0
Gilmour had a shot blocked by the keeper, then McGlynn got to the goal
line and from an almost impossible angle managed to hit a shot on target
which was hooked off the line.
Milne made a vital block at the back post to prevent Logan of Linlithgow
opening the scoring.
Five minutes from time, Walker had a tremendous save, diving full length
to tip a net bound shot from 20 yards over the bar.
The game went to penalty kicks which Whitburn won comfortably. Milne
and Hannah converted the first two kicks for Whitburn, while Walker had
two fine saves from Linlithgow's first two kicks. McGlynn scored to make
it 3-0 then Linlithgow made it 3-1. Gilmour made it 4 out of 4 to take
Whitburn to the final.

Fife & Lothian's Cup final
Whitburn 1 Linlithgow 5, Scorer - McGlynn
Whitburn's 20 game winning streak came to an end
with an emphatic defeat at the hands of Linlithgow.
Linlithgow opened the scoring after eight minutes
when several quick passes outside the box pulled the Whitburn defence out
of position, and when the ball came across to Corcoran at the left of the
box , he calmly placed it into the far corner of the net.
Whitburn pushed forward and McPherson had to
be quick to get down to a Davy McGlynn volley from the edge of the box.
But it was Linlithgow who continued to look more
dangerous and Campbell did well to head a looping Logan header clear with
Walker beaten.
Whitburn gifted the cup to Linlithgow after half
an hour's play, conceding two goals due to slack defending.
The first came when Walker in goal, and under
no real pressure misdirected a pass straight to Dickov who squared the
ball across goal for Flynn to stroke it into the empty net.
Less than a minute later, with the Whitburn defence
still recovering from the loss of a needless goal, a through ball took
out the whole defence allowing Flynn a clear run om goal, and he calmly
slotted the ball past Walker.
Whitburn tried to push forward, but although
having better possesion, couldn't seriously threaten the Linlithgow goal.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Linlithgow 3
Linlithgow almost scored a fourth just agter the restart, but a brave
save by Walker denied Logan.
Whitburn pulled a goal back 7 minutes into the second half. Hannah
crossed the ball from the right to McGlynn, who turned and fired
a shot in off the post.
Five minutes later, Milne did well to block a shot from Logan after
he had been set up by the on form Flynn.
Whitburn were having a better spell at this point and Milne had a good
penalty claim turned down after he was tripped in the box. A good run from
midfield by Gilmour saw him burst into the box to get on the end of a cross
from Taylor, but his header lacked power and was saved by McPherson.
Whitburn, after their brief spell on top, were gradually pushed back
and it was no surprise when Linlithgow extended their lead, Flynn scoring
his hat trick after being set up by Dickov.
Linlithgow were totally on top now and hit the post with a low effort
by McLaughlin.
Paul Taylor was sent off with 10 minutes remaining after an off the
ball incident involving Logan, who escaped punishment.
Linlithgow made it 5-1 with 5 miniutes remaining when Corcoran slotted
home the rebound after Flynn's shot was blocked.
With a couple of minutes remaining, Whitburn were reduced to 9 men
when Campbell was rightly ordered off for reacting to a tackle by Logan
who once again escaped punishment. This sparked a pushing match in the
centre of the park with about 18 players involved, but surprisingly nobody
else was ordered off.
Whitburn can have no complaints about the result or the scoreline,
having been outplayed by Linlithgow for the majority of the game, but it
could be interesting when the teams meet again on Wednesday.

Whitburn 1 Camelon 0, Scorer - MacKenzie
Whitburn overcame Camelon in a hard fought match to reach their second final of the season. Whitburn had the best of the early play and created a few half chances. Camelon gradually came into the game as the game progressed, but failed to seriously threaten the Whitburn goal.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Camelon 0
Alan MacKenzie scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the
second half with a header from a McGlynn cross, but Whitburn can thank
goalkeeper Stewart Walker who had several excellent saves, one at point
blank range which looked a certain goal. He even managed to beat Andy Hume
in the air with a headed clearance outside the box.
MacKenzie came close when he shot over following a move which started
with Walker before being crossed into the box by McGlynn.
McGlynn himself came close with 5 minutes remaining when a through
ball left him with the keeper to beat, but he opted to round the keeper
and was forced wide. His shot came back off the woodwork but Whitburn were
unable to force the loose ball home.
The game became rather scrappy in the second half with several nasty
challenges, although both teams managed to finish with 11 men.

Newtongrange 1 Whitburn 2, Scorer - MacKenzie(2)
This was the final league game of the season, and with the league trophy
already housed at Whitburn, the only real issue was whether Whitburn could
extend their 18 march winning run, or would Newtongrange be the team to
bring it to an end.
Neither tean was at full strength, with Whitburn missing Lloyd Haddow
and top scorer Davy Mcglynn, although Colin Campbell returned to the defence
after his 2 game suspension. Whitburn introduced a trialist in midfield.
Newtongrange opened the scoring and held their lead till half time.
Half time: Newtongrange 1 Whitburn 0
Whitburn stepped up the pace after half time, keen to keep the winning
run going, and equalised after 55 minutes. MacKenzie challenged for
a cross ball and the ball broke from him to the keeper. However, the spin
of the ball caused it to slip through the keeper's hands and over the line.
The winner came after 70 minutes and again it was MacKenzie who scored.
McPhee saw his effort come back off the bar and rebound to MacKenzie
around the penalty spot, and he managed to redirect the ball into goal.
Stewart Walker had three point blank saves during the course of the
game which went a long way to ensuring Whitburn took all three points and
finish the league campaign a massive eleven points clear of second place
Linlithgow.

League
Whitburn 2 Linlithgow 1, Scorer - McGlynn(2)
Before the game, the Whitburn FCA Juvenile teams formed a guard of honour, to welcome Whitburn onto the park in recognition of winning the League Championship.
Both teams had early chances, Whitburn's McGlynn and Dickov of Linlithgow
coming close.
Linlithgow opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Findlayson was
given space to place a powerful header into the net, following a corner
from the left.
Flynn of Linlithgow had a couple of chances to increase their lead,
with one miss in particular, a header at the back post, going down in the
glaring miss category, when he somehow failed to find the target with Walker
stranded.
Bruce Clouston tried a curling 30 yard effort with the outside of his
right foot, but although spectacular, it was never in any danger of hitting
the target.
The game exploded after 30 minutes when two Linlithgow players were
sent off. Goalkeeper Lamont and defender McMahon both tried to intercept
a low ball which had been played into the six yard box. It looked the keepers
ball all the way, so much so that Davy McGlynn checked out of his run.
However, Lamont somehow managed to fumble the ball and become entangled
with McMahon. The loose ball fell nicely for McGlynn who kept his
cool to slot the ball home for the equaliser. That sparked an amazing incident
when the two Linlithgow men came to blows and were both ordered from the
field, reducing Linlithgow to 9 men. Ronnie Macpherson took over in goal
with Flynn being withdrawn.
Whitburn took the lead 5 minutes later through McGlynn, who
had an easy job of sidefooting home a low ball from Malcolm on the left
wing for his 36th goal of the season.
Whitburn almost scored again when a good run through the middle by
Hannah saw his shot from the edge of the box beat the advancing keeper,
but come back off the base of the post.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Linlithgow 1
The second half was predictable given the circumstances, with Linlithgow
content to sit back and defend, allowing Whitburn plenty of possession.
However, the expected onslaught of Macpherson's goal never really materialised
with most of Whitburn's moves breaking down at the edge of the area, or
because of misplaced passes.
Linlithgow were dangerous on the break and Dickov twice came close
to equalising. First he brought a great save out of Walker who had to dive
full length to fingertip an effort onto the post and out for a corner.
Then a jinking run left several defenders in his wake, and only a tremendous
last gasp block by Gilmour prevented a certain goal.
Whitburn introduced a trialist, assistant coach McComiskey, for McGlynn
and he almost scored an opportunist goal when he first timed a poor clearance
back towards the empty Linlithgow goal from about 30 yards out, but didn't
hit the target.
Stevie Gallen should have put the game beyond doubt with 5 minutes
remaining. A cross from Taylor on the left was knocked on to him at the
back post by Malcolm, but with the Linlithgow keeper nowhere he could only
find the side netting when it looked easier to score.
To the cheers of the large crowd who had turned up for the occasion,
Whitburn were presented with the League Championship trophy at full time.

Bonnyrigg 0 Whitburn 1, Scorer - McGlynn
With Colin Campbell and Lloyd Haddow suspended, Whitburn moved Milne
into the centre of defence, Paul Taylor taking his place at left back.
Sean Bonnar replaced Haddow in the centre of midfield. Bonnyrigg were also
short of players, and with both their regular keepers missing, had a 17
year old trialist in goal.
Whitburn went at Bonnyrigg right from the start, looking for the win
that would clinch the League. Davy McGlynn picked up the ball 10 yards
into the Bonnyrigg half and ran forward before hitting a shot from the
edge of the box that went just past.
Kenny Hannah came close when he headed a cross ball from the left against
the bar.
Bonnyrigg had chances too, and Whitburn keeper Walker had to be alert
to stop a spectacular drive from wide on the right wing from finding the
net.
The strong sun caused problems when Paul Taylor lost sight of the ball
and it fell to a Bonnyrigg player, but with only the keeper to beat he
shot wide, under pressure from the outrushing Walker.
A corner kick on the left caused panic in the Whitburn goalmouth when
an attempted clearance at the front post was miskicked, and spun in the
air before being scrambled away for another corner.
Hannah came close with another header that went narrowly over following
a cross from Bonnar on the left.
Half time: Bonnyrigg 0 Whitburn 0
Whitburn stepped up the tempo in the second half and put the Bonnyrigg
defence under pressure for a spell, but were caught going forward when
a Bonnyrigg midfielder broke from his own half. The Whitburn defence were
struggling to catch him, but his attempt on goal from outside the box missed
the target.
Whitburn scored after 60 minutes when McGlynn met a Hannah corner
from the left and directed the ball into goal from inside a crowded six
yard box. The corner had been won when Sean Bonnar took a free kick from
inside the centre circle and shot direct for goal, forcing the keeper to
tip the ball over the bar.
A few minutes later Craig was just out of reach of a ball across goal
from McGlynn, and could only deflect the ball past.
Alan MacKenzie tried a snap shot from 30 yards that needed an excellent
save from the young Bonnyrigg trialist keeper, to prevent the ball from
finding the net.
Stuart Gilmour had a couple of good runs towards goal on the left of
the box, but on each occasion waited too long before shooting and was crowded
out.
Bonnyrigg looked a tired team, and posed little real threat to the
Whitburn goal for most of the second half, and in the end Whitburn saw
out the game comfortably for their 17th consecutive victory, and the League
Championship.

Whitburn 2 Arniston 0, Scorers - MacKenzie, Craig
There was plenty at stake in this game, with Arniston
needing a point to avoid relegation, and Whitburn looking for a win to
stay in pole position for the Championship.
The first half was a scrappy affair with Whitburn
enjoying most of the possession but failing to create many clear chances.
McGlynn came close in an incident in the six
yard box, but the ball was scrambled clear.
Whitburn opened the scoring 5 minutes from half
time. Lloyd Haddow received the ball from a throw in on the right and curled
in a left foot cross to the middle of the box. Alan MacKenzie did
well to redirect the ball past Kirkwood with a well placed header.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Arniston 0
Whitburn made it 2-0 just 5 minutes after thr
break with another headed goal. Callum Milne floated a free kick into the
box from the centre of the park for Kevin Craig to find the net
with a downward header for Whitburn's 100th goal of the season.
This second goal settled Whitburn, but it was
Arniston who reacted more positively, and Walker had to react sharply to
keep out a couple of efforts from the edge of the box in the next 10 minutes.
Whitburn took control of the game after this
and came close to increasing their lead on several occasions.
MacKenzie saw a couple of efforts saved by Kirkwood,
then McGlynn headed a cross from Hannah just over from about 10 yards out.
Craig came close to scoring his second goal when
he stretched to get a foot to a cross to the back post, but was unable
to direct the ball into the net.
Arniston had the ball in the net with 15 minutes
remaining, but it was ruled offside.
Arniston goalkeeper Kirkwood was injured saving
from McGlynn with 15 minutes left and had to be replaced.
Paul Taylor had the ball in the net a few minutes
later, but was adjudged to have fouled the substitute keeper in a challenge
for a high ball.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 when another free kick was played into

Haddington pulled a goal back after 27 minutes, but 5 minutes later,
Whitburn restored their lead with a spectacular volley from the edge of
the area by Davy McGlynn, from a Hannah cross.
Half time: Whitburn 3 Haddington 1
McGlynn scored his second goal of the game after 68 minutes when he

Whitburn 2 Oakley 0, Scorers - MacKenzie, Hannah
Whitburn, looking to reach their first final of
the season, got off to the best possible start with a goal after only two
minutes. Following a neat move up the right, Kevin Craig took the ball
to the bye line and cut it back into the box. Alan MacKenzie collected
the ball with his back to goal, turned and shot home from about 12 yards.
The same player almost scored again five minutes
later when his shot rattled down off the crossbar and was cleared.
Whitburn dominated the opening fifteen minutes,
but Oakley gradually came into the game and put Whitburn under pressure
for long periods.
Whitburn had chances too, and came close when
Hannah sent a drive narrowly over from the edge of the box after the ball
was laid off to him.
Stuart Walker had to be alert to get down and
block a free kick from the left that almost found its way in at the post.
The keeper was hurt saving the shot when he landed awkwardly but was okay
after treatment.
Both teams came close to scoring as half time
approached. Oakley looked to have scored with a low drive from 15 yards,
but Walker somehow managed to get across his goal and block the effort.
Then MacKenzie hit the woodwork for the second
time when he headed the ball against the post.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Oakley 0
The second half saw Oakley continue to push forward
looking for an equaliser, but Whitburn's defence was determined to give
nothing away.
Walker was called into action to save long range
efforts from Newbigging. First he reacted to fingertip a free kick from
25 yards over for a corner. A few minutes later another long-range free
kick was blocked by Walker at his right post, but fell perfectly for an
inrushing forward. Fortunately for Whitburn the shot rattled the post and
was cleared.
Whitburn clinched a place in the final when Kenny
Hannah broke into the box and fired home via the base of the post with
5 minutes remaining.
This win extends Whitburn's record winning run
to 14 games since they were beaten by Kilwinning in the Scottish cup in
January, and they will now meet Linlithgow in the Final.

League
Whitburn 4 Camelon 0, Scorers - McGlynn(2), Hannah, Haddow(pen))
Whitburn enjoyed a great first half and had the points as good as won
after only 20 minutes.
The first goal came after just 10 minutes when Davy McGlynn
hooked home a good cross by Alan MacKenzie from the right for his 30th goal
of the season, in just 27 appearances. Two minutes later the same man made
it 2-0. Kevin Craig ran on to a through ball on the right and sent in a
cross which McGlynn bundled over the line with defenders desperately
trying to clear.
Kenny Hannah made it 3-0 after 20 minutes when he picked up
the ball on the left, cut along the 18 yard line and fired a great shot
from the edge of the box which left the keeper flat footed. Whitburn played
some excellent football during the first half and a 3 goal lead at half
time was no more than they deserved.
Half time: Whitburn 3 Camelon 0
The second half saw Whitburn content to hold what they had, and this
they did comfortably for the most part, although Camelon were very unlucky
not to pull a goal back when a shot beat Walker and hit the base of the
post before rolling all the way along the goal line to be cleared at the
other side.
Former Whitburn favourite, Andy Hume, was winning a lot of balls in
the air, but his team mates couldn't capitalize. Kevin Henderson did well
to keep tabs on Andy and won a fair share of headers, considering the height
difference.
The game erupted 10 minutes from time with Camelon having two men sent
off. Camelon centre half, Grant Tierney, brought down McGlynn from the
back with a scything tackle. Amazingly the referee didn't even speak to
him and only awarded a free kick. 30 seconds later he brought down McGlynn
again with an identical challenge, for which the referee sent him off.
The Camelon number 4 was also sent off, presumably for something he said.
Before continuing, Whitburn replaced McGlynn, who had been on the receiving
end of several other rash challenges, with Stevie Gallen. With 5 minutes
remaining Gallen won a penalty when he was brought down in the box. Lloyd
Haddow scored easily from the spot.
As the teams were entering the dressing rooms after the game, the referee
was seen to show the red card to another Camelon player, again presumably
for speaking out of turn.

Blackburn 2 Whitburn 4, Scorers - Gilmour, MacKenzie, Haddow, Milne
Gilmour came close for Whitburn a couple of times
in the opening 10 minutes. First he saw a 20 yard effort saved at the second
attempt by the keeper, then MacKenzie crossed from the right and Gilmour
volleyed the ball from 15 yards, but the ball bounced inches over the bar.
The same combination brought the opening goal after 20 minutes when MacKenzie
crossed to the back post for Gilmour to head home.
Blackburn responded by going forward and should
have scored, but Allison shot wide from a good right wing cross.
Whitburn's second goal came a couple of minutes
from half time when Haddow sent in a good near post cross from the left
for MacKenzie to side foot into goal at the near post, after a good
run across the defence.
Half time: Blackburn 0 Whitburn 2
Kevin Craig set up the third goal 5 minutes into
the second half, when he won the ball in the centre of the park and drove
forward, riding another couple of challenges before releasing the ball
to Lloyd Haddow on the right of the box. From a tight angle, Haddowsteadied
himself before squeezing the ball past the keeper into the net.
Stuart Malcolm then hit the Blackburn bar with
a snap-shot after the ball was headed down to him.
Whitburn brought on goalkeeper Derek Watson for
his first game since signing from Stoneyburn, with 20 minutes remaining
Blackburn scored after 75 minutes when a through
ball caught the Whitburn defence sleeping, allowing Woods to beat Watson
with a fine 20 yard drive which the keeper could do nothing about.
Whitburn responded by scoring a fourth goal within
a couple of minutes. Paul Taylor took a corner from the left and crossed
the ball to the edge of the area where Callum Milne met it on the
full with a left foot volley into the top corner of the net.
Although the game was now beyond them, Blackburn
didn't give up and created several chances in the closing minutes and were
rewarded with 5 minutes remaining. Taylor was short with a pass back, and
keeper Watson could only fire his attempted clearance against an inrushing
forward. The ball fell for McCardie to tap into the empty net.

Edinburgh United 1 Whitburn 2, Scorer - McGlynn(2(1 pen))
Whitburn struggled to overcome a determined Edinburgh
side, but eventually secured the victory that takes them to the top of
the League.
The first chance came to Whitburn after only
two minutes when Kenny Hannah fired a left foot drive across goal and out
at the far side for a goal kick.
Edinburgh responded within a couple of minutes
when a long throw into the box was headed goalwards and came back off the
post with keeper Walker beaten.
Whitburn struggled to find any fluency during
the first half, but still created a couple of decent chances, and one in
particular needed a good block by the goalkeeper when McGlynn turned sharply
inside the six yard box and tried a snap shot.
It was Edinburgh who took the lead midway through
the first half when the centre forward beat the offside trap and rounded
Walker before scoring.
Half time: Edinburgh 1 Whitburn 0
Whitburn dominated most of the second half, but a combination of bad
luck or poor finishing saw a series of chances squandered before the equaliser
came, midway through the half. Hannah crossed from the right, MacKenzie
headed the ball back across goal and McGlynn was on hand to stab
the ball past the keeper.
Whitburn continued to push forward looking for the second goal, but
were having a frustrating night in front of goal.
McGlynn came close with a shot on the turn, and Hannah and Gilmour
both fired efforts wildly over.
Edinburgh had their moments too, mainly from corners and long throws
which were as good as corners, but Walker wasn't seriously troubled, although
at times the defenders in front of him had to scramble the ball clear.
With time running out, Whitburn finally got the important second goal
with a penalty with just 5 minutes remaining, after Gilmour was fouled
by the keeper inside the box. Davy McGlynn made no mistake with
the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way.

This match saw Stevie Prior, Whitburn's Scottish
cup winning captain, lining up for Haddington, the first time he had played
against his old team since his move at the start of the season. Also in
Haddington colours were former Whitburn players Stevie Richardson and substitute
Mark McGinlay. Whitburn were missing Stuart Gilmour, away on international
duty in Ireland.
Whitburn started brightly, and Alan MacKenzie
came close to continuing his excellent scoring run with a header from a
cross from the right, but the keeper saved well.
The opening goal came after 8 minutes when Former
Whitburn sweeper Stevie Richardson misjudged the bounce of a through ball,
allowing Davy McGlynn to direct the ball past the outrushing keeper
into the empty net.
Whitburn went two up after 18 minutes with a
tremendous goal from Kenny Hannah. Kevin Henderson did well to win
the ball on the left touchline and pick out Hannah with a fine ball across
the the middle of the park. Hannah gathered the ball and hit a great shot
from 30 yards into the keepers top right corner.
Haddington had a chance to pull a goal back when
Walker delayed too long with a clearance after a pass back. The clearance
was charged down but the ball was fired over the bar.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Haddington 0
Haddington pushed forward from the start of the second half and kept
Whitburn on the defensive for long spells, but failed to create many real
scoring opportunities.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men 5 minutes into the second half following
an incident at the edge of the Whitburn box. Campbell of Whitburn and Black
of Haddington were both sent off.
MacKenzie had a good shot from just inside the box but the keeper got
a hand to the ball.
Then McGlynn got free of the Haddington defence but was challenged
at the edge of the box in the act of shooting, and his attempt went just
wide.
Sean Bonnar made his first appearance since August when he replaced
Kevin Craig midway through the half.
Whitburn went 3-0 ahead after 70 minutes when McGlynn once again
broke through and stroked the ball past the keeper into the net from 16
yards.
Whitburn almost scored again with a neat passing move starting on the
left which ended with Hannah shooting narrowly past.
Haddington pulled a goal back with a couple of minutes remaining when
substitute Grant headed past Walker from inside the six yard box.

Fauldhouse 0 Whitburn 3, Scorers - McPhee, MacKenzie, McGlynn
Whitburn were made to fight all the way before making sure of all 3 points with two late goals, and in doing so, moved a couple of positions closer to the top of the league. Fauldhouse hit the bar in the second half, and had a possible penalty turned down before losing 3-0, a score which was not a true reflection of the play.
Half time: Fauldhouse 0 Whitburn 0
Whitburn finally made the breakthrough after 51 minutes when Billy
McPhee converted a cross from Kevin Craig.
Stewart Walker in goal had a couple of outstanding saves, and Whitburn
can thank him for keeping them ahead when he pulled off a tremendous reflex
save with the game at 1-0.
Whitburn made sure of all three points with two late goals. Alan
MacKenzie, who worked hard all game, kept his impressive scoring run
going when he knocked the ball home in the 80th minute, after a McGlynn
effort was blocked. Alan has now scored in each of the last seven games.
Three minutes later, Davy McGlynn scored the third when he converted
a cross from Stuart Malcolm, who had made a difference after coming on
as a substitute.

Whitburn 2 Bonnyrigg 1, Scorers - MacKenzie, McGlynn
With the strong wind at their backs, Whitburn
got off to a great start and opened the scoring after only 5 minutes. From
a tight position near the right corner flag, Hannah found space and fired
in a low cross for Alan MacKenzie to slot home.
Paul Taylor came close when he got on the end
of a deep cross and fired in a shot from almost on the goal line, which
Bonnyrigg keeper Ellison blocked for a corner.
Taylor was replaced by Kevin Craig after 25 minutes
when he was forced to go off injured after twisting his ankle as he crossed
the ball.
Bonnyrigg equalised within a couple of minutes
of the substitution, following a mistake by Callum Milne who lost
the ball at the left touchline. The ball was driven across goal by McKean
where Bruce Clouston looked to have the danger covered. However, his kick
completely missed the ball, perhaps because of a bad bounce, and fell to
a Watt at the back post who scored easily.
Midway through the half, Stewart Walker brought
off a great save when he dived full length to push away a 25 yard effort
which was heading for his top left corner.
Clouston was unlucky not to score when he drove
a low shot from 30 yards with the outside of his right foot, which was
curling in at the base of the post until the keeper brought off a great
diving save.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Bonnyrigg 1
Whitburn restored their lead just 5 minutes into
the second half. Davy McGlynn was put clear on the left, just inside
the Bonnyrigg half by Gilmour, and headed for goal. He cut into the left
side of the box and with everyone expecting the ball to be played across
the front of goal, hit a fierce left foot shot between the post and the
keeper, who had started to go the wrong way.
Bonnyrigg had most of the pressure during the
second half as they looked for an equaliser, and came close when Milne
cleared the ball off the line to make up for his earlier mistake.
Whitburn's defence, with Campbell in particular
having a very solid game, were coping with Bonnyrigg's attacks, although
sometimes the clearnces were a bit desperate.
McGlynn almost scored a carbon copy of his first
goal when he once again got free of the defence and cut into the box. He
skipped through a couple of tackles and steadied himself before driving
the ball towards the open goal from the left of the 6 yard box. However,
a Bonnyrigg defender did well to get his head to the shot which had looked
a certain score.
Kevin Craig, who had come on as a substitute
for Taylor was forced to go off injured after also twisting his ankle,
and was replaced by Stevie Gallen.
Bonnyrigg had a great chance to equalise when
a the ball fell to Young inside the box, but he shot well over the bar.
Whitburn finished the stronger team, and good
work from Gallen outside the box let McGlynn in again. Davy showed some
great footwork to go past the defenders and goalkeeper, and from a tight
angle hit a shot that went right across goal and narrowly past the far
post, with Haddow just unable to make contact.
This was an exciting game between two teams chasing
the League Championship, with plenty of commitment and good football on
show from both teams.

Whitburn 3 Blackburn 2, Scorers - Malcolm, MacKenzie, Craig
Blackburn can consider themselves unfortunate
not to come out of this game with at least a draw, against a Whitburn team
that performed below their usual standard, perhaps underestimating their
opponents.
Whitburn almost opened the scoring in the 2nd
minute but Malcolm miskicked in front of goal.
Whitburn looked comfortable for the opening ten
minutes, but Blackburn gained confidence and were the best team for most
of the first half, although both teams created several decent chances.
Blackburn took a deserved lead after 30 minutes
when good movement from their front players pulled the Whitburn defence
out of position, leaving Hamilton with the simple task of placing the ball
into the empty net.
Whitburn equalised within two minutes following
good work from MacKenzie on the right. The ball was played across and miskicked
in front of goal, but came to the back post where Stuart Malcolm
was in the right place to redirect an attempted clearance into the net
for his first goal for Whitburn.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Blackburn 1
Blackburn restored their lead after 55 minutes following a mix up between
Callum Milne and goal keeper Stewart Walker. A high ball ball was played
into the box from the left,.but both Whitburn players hesitated, allowing
Blackburn's Lamb to get between them and slot the ball home.
Again, the lead was only held for a couple of minutes before Whitburn
equalised. Kevin Craig crossed from the right for Alan MacKenzie
to head home his fifth goal in five games.
Lloyd Haddow was fortunate to stay on the park, when the referee missed
what appeared to be an elbow to the face of a Blackburn defender who needed
treatment before continuing. Blackburn must have felt hard done by, as
a few minutes later Haddow supplied a cross from the right for Craig
to
head home his first goal of the season, for what was to be the winning
goal.
Blackburn had a great chance to take the game to penalties in the final
minute when Lamb got free on the left, but his shot went narrowly past.

Whitburn 2 Bathgate 1, Scorers - McGlynn (pen), MacKenzie
Most of the first half hour was fairly even with both teams competing
mainly in midfield and few clear chances being created.
Bathgate brought a good save out of Walker before Whitburn stepped
up a gear as the interval approached, and came close when Hannah backheeled
a pass from Clouston towards goal, but Bathgate keeper Balfour saved the
attempt. The opening goal was only delayed however, and came after Haddow
was tripped as he broke into the box following a strong run from midfield
in the 40th minute. Bathgate's number 6 was sent off, presumably for denying
the scoring opportunity, before Davy McGlynn converted the resulting
penalty.
A couple of minutes later McGlynn left the Bathgate defence standing
with a neat turn on the left and ran into the box, before squaring the
ball across goal where Alan MacKenzie had an easy tap in to continue
his recent scoring run.
MacKenzie had the ball in the net again when he was on hand to slot
home rebound after Balfour couldn't hold a Haddow shot, bur it was disallowed
for offside.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Bathgate 0
Early in the second half, Alan MacKenzie rounded the keeper and appeared
to be brought down. However, the referee awarded a free kick against him
and booked him for diving.
Bathgate had the ball in the net when a shot looped over Walker and
bounced in, but it was disallowed for offside.
Lloyd Haddow was sent off 10 minutes from time for his part in an altercation
with Bathgate's number 10, who although by no means innocent, got off without
so much as a word from the referee.
Bathgate, with the wind at their backs in the second half, stepped
up the pressure towards the end and gained a series of corner kicks which
came to nothing.
Five minutes from the end they were awarded a free kick outside the
box on the left after Colin Campbell had fouled his opponent. This brought
the best goal of the game when the kick was driven over the Whitburn wall
into Walker's top left corner.
Gallen had a chance to score Whitburn's third when he was put clear
at the edge of the box, but his effort was saved.

Newtongrange 0 Whitburn 1, Scorer - MacKenzie
Both teams started the game at a hectic pace, with Newtongrange looking
determined to make amends for their recent defeat by Whitburn.
The first half was fairly even in terms of possession, but Newtongrange
had the best opportunities to score. Twice Rixon found himself through
with only the keeper to beat, but Walker in the Whitburn goal was quickly
off his line to close him down and make excellent saves. On another occasion
Walker had to react quickly, diving low to his right to save a volley from
outside the box. Before these chances, McGlynn came close for Whitburn
when he took the ball round keeper Oliver but the ball ran too wide and
he was crowded out.
The referee had a busy time during the first half, booking six players
in all, and also having a couple of off the ball incidents to deal with,
although without neutral linesmen there was little he could do about them.
Half time: Newtongrange 0 Whitburn 0
Newtongrange were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when McCaul
was sent off for a second caution, having been booked during the first
half. His offence was to bring down Kenny Hannah with a late challenge,
when the Whitburn man was in the process of running past him on the right
touchline. This was to be a decisive moment as for the remainder
of the game Newtongrange were forced back into defence as Whitburn pressed
forward and created numerous chances.
Davy McGlynn got free on the right and fired in a spectacular shot
from almost on the touchline, which flashed across the face of goal and
out at the far side with Henderson trying to get his head to the ball.
Whitburn finally made the breakthrough with 20 minutes remaining. McGlynn
headed on a corner from the right for MacKenzie to control the ball
and drive in a low shot which keeper Oliver couldn't keep out.
Gilmour, who had come on as a substitute, came close to scoring a spectacular
goal with a volley from outside the box which went narrowly over. MacKenzie
then found himself through with only the keeper to beat, but Oliver was
quick to come out and save the effort.
MacKenzie almost scored a second in the 80th minute when he made space
for himself with a brilliant turn at the edge of the box, before curling
in a low left foot shot which forced Oliver to bring off a fine save low
at his post.
Newtongrange pushed forward in the final minutes in an effort to equalise
and take the game to penalties.
Walker had to scramble across his goal to push an effort from 25 yards
round the post for a corner. Another corner kick followed and was eventually
cleared before the referee blew for full time.

Whitburn 3 Bonnyrigg 1, Scorers - McGlynn(2 (1 pen)), MacKenzie
Whitburn took the lead after only 4 minutes when Bonnyrigg keeper Ellison
mis-kicked a goal kick. The ball fell to Davy McGlynn just outside
the box, and he controlled it before running forward and placing the ball
past the keeper into the net.
Bonnyrigg came close to equalising with a 25 yard effort which took
a deflection and went narrowly over the bar.
Whitburn went 2-0 ahead 5 minutes from half time with a penalty kick.
Alan MacKenzie turned his man just inside the box and was tripped. McGlynn
took the spot kick and scored, with the keeper going the wrong way.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Bonnyrigg 0
Bonnyrigg were reduced to 10 men just 1 minute into the second half.
Simpson chased a bouncing ball into the box and although Whitburn keeper
Walker gathered the high ball comfortably, the forward kept going and caught
him with his studs for which he received a straight red card.
With Walker struggling from the knock, Bonnyrigg came close when a
lobbed ball came back off the bar and was scrambled clear by the defence.
Although down to 10 men, Bonnyrigg were having the better of the second
half, and it was no surprise when they pulled a goal back after 55 minutes.
A free kick from the right was taken quickly, and headed powerfully
home by Reid with the Whitburn defence still trying to get organised.
Bonnyrigg continued to press and keeper Walker was forced to make a
couple of excellent saves and also to show some bravery to keep Whitburn
ahead.
Whitburn sealed victory with 5 minutes remaining. Good work from Stuart
Malcolm provided McGlynn with the chance to score his second hat trick
in successive games, but he was crowded out at the edge of the box. However,
his blocked shot fell to Alan MacKenzie at the left of the area,
and he showed great composure in collecting the ball and placing it past
Ellison into the net.

Whitburn 4 Musselburgh 3, Scorers - MacKenzie, McGlynn(3 (1 pen))
The early stages of this game saw Musselburgh creating several excellent
scoring opportunities against a surprisingly slack Whitburn defence. Perhaps
the lack of matches in recent weeks was a contributing factor as other
areas of the team were also performing below their usual standard.
On at least three occasions during this period Musselburgh carved open
the Whitburn defence with some neat passing football, only to see the final
effort wasted with only keeper Walker to beat.
Whitburn also had a couple of chances, one of which was a free kick
for a deliberate passback, although I have only once seen a goal scored
from this situation (for Pollok against Whitburn).
Stuart Gilmour powered in a header from about 10 yards following a
right wing cross from Kenny Hannah, but Musselburgh keeper Cunningham brought
off an equally impressive save.
Musselburgh took a deserved lead after 35 minutes when Pyrie had an
easy job of knocking in a cutback after Whitburn's defence, not for the
first time in the game, failed to clear the ball.
On the stroke of half time neat work by Gallen on the edge of the box
put McGlynn through with a great chance to equalise, but his shot was hit
against the keeper.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Musselburgh 1
The second half started much the same as the first with Whitburn struggling
to find form, although they were containing their opponents better.
Fifteen minutes into the half, however, Musselburgh extended their
lead. With Whitburn trying to play Musselburgh offside, Porteous broke
away on the right. The defence managed to get back and forced him wide
but he managed to play the ball inside for McGovern to score.
One minute later and and it looked like the game was over as a contest.
Musselburgh broke down the left with Whitburn claiming for offside. Walker
brought off a fine save but the ball broke high to the far post where the
unmarked Porteous fired home to make the score 3-0.
Then came a remarkable turnaround with three goals in 10 minutes. Whitburn
brought on substitutes Calum Milne and Kevin Craig, and almost immediatly
started to move the ball about in a more positive and confident manner.
Alan MacKenzie pulled a goal back when
he collected a loose ball inside the box and turned sharply to score.
The second goal came from the penalty spot. Kenny
Hannah sent over a deep cross from the right which was picked up by MacKenzie
on the left of the box. He attempted to play the ball back into the danger
area but it struck the arm of a defender and the referee awarded a penalty,
which Davy McGlynn converted easily against his former team.
Musselburgh were visibly tiring, and weren't helped when Johnston was
sent off for time wasting, having been booked earlier.
Whitburn equalised in the 70th minute with a simple but spectacular
goal. Colin Campbell cleared the ball from deep in his own half straight
down the middle of the park, where the bounce caught out the Musselburgh
defenders and fell perfectly for McGlynn at the edge of the box.
Davy met the ball as it dropped and slammed a left foot shot past the keeper
into the corner of the net.
In the final minute, Musselburgh were stunned when Whitburn scored
the winner. Kenny Hannah, who was making some good runs up the right, got
past the defender and sent in another fine cross to the near post. Davy
McGlynn met the ball on the run and powered a header into the net for
his hat-trick.

Newtongrange 0 Whitburn 2, Scorers - McGlynn, MacKenzie
Whitburn won this game comfortably, but perhaps would have had a tougher
test if Newtongrange were not playing Kilwinning next week in the Scottish
Cup.
The first 20 minutes saw few clear chances created, with Whitburn enjoying
the bulk of attacking play.
Whitburn were the first to seriously threaten their opponents goal
when they went close with a header following a corner kick.
Newtongrange responded with a shot from outside the box that went past
the post with Walker rushing across his goal in an effort to cover it.
A couple of minutes later they had a great opportunity when Jamieson played
the ball through the centre of Whitburn's defence, but the forward, in
space in front of goal, failed to take a touch and the ball rolled away
from him and was cleared.
Whitburn almost scored through an own goal after 30 minutes. Hannah
took a corner from the left and the ball was deflected goalwards by McCaul,
but Jamieson cleared off the line.
Whitburn took the lead 2 minutes from half time with a move that started
in their own box and involved at least a dozen neat passes before Hannah
swung in a cross from the right for McGlynn to bullet a header into
the corner of the net.
Half time: Newtongrange 0 Whitburn 1
McGlynn almost scored again just after the restart, when Hannah sent
in a low cross from the right that went across the face of goal, but was
just outside McGlynn's reach.
McGlynn came close again when he showed great control to chest down
a pass from Campbell on the left of the box, and hit a low shot that the
keeper did well to block.
MacKenzie scored the second goal after 60 minutes when he hit
a low left foot shot from the edge of the box that took a slight deflection
and spun under the diving keeper into the net.
Keeper Oliver almost gifted Whitburn a third goal when, under no pressure,
he dropped a high ball into the box. The ball dropped onto the goal line
and between his feet before he recovered and picked it up.
Two minutes from the end, Whitburn were awarded a free kick on the
edge of the box. McGlynn chipped the ball over the wall but it rattled
the bar with keeper Oliver beaten.

O.V.D. Scottish Cup 4th round
Whitburn 1 Kilwinning 2, Scorer - McGlynn
This game went ahead at the third attempt, having
been postponed the previous two Saturdays because of the weather.
The first real chance came for Kilwinning after
15 minutes. The ball was played into the box from a corner kick to be met
by Currie with a powerful header from about 10 yards out. Walker reacted
brilliantly to touch the effort over the bar.
Kilwinning scored after 40 minutes. A corner
kick was taken from the right and played on to the back post where the
unmarked Montgomery had an easy tap in.
A few minutes later, Cameron hit a fierce angled
shot from out on the left touchline that Walker did well to push over the
bar.
Whitburn equalised a minute before half time,
mainly thanks to the determination of Bruce Clouston. He won a couple of
tackles in midfield that looked to be lost causes and played the ball to
Hannah on the right. Hannah made space and crossed the ball into the six-yard
box where David McGlynn stretched out a foot to toe end the ball
into the net.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Kilwinning 1
Whitburn played more positively in the second
half and had a couple of early efforts that didn't have enough power in
them to trouble keeper Robertson, although McGlynn's deflected shot almost
got past him.
Kilwinning responded with a spell of pressure
that ended when Walker held a low shot from outside the box.
Whitburn were unlucky not to take the lead after
60 minutes when Kenny Hannah got onto a blocked Gilmour shot inside the
box and hit a powerful effort against the underside of the bar, only to
see it bounce down onto the line before being scrambled clear.
The early pressure was to be Whitburn's downfall
as they were caught on the break when Montgomery ran onto a long
clearance inside the box and beat the outrushing Walker with a low shot
to score.
Whitburn kept pushing forward and had several
attempts at goal, but again the efforts weren't well hit and caused little
trouble.
Kilwinning were awarded a penalty 2 minutes from
the end when Walker dived at the feet of a Kilwinning forward and brought
him down. Walker was booked, then made amends by diving low to save the
kick, although it wasn't well taken and was hit too close to the keeper.
Just after this Walker had to rush out of his
box to tackle a forward who had got clear. The keeper didn't get the ball
and the forward went down, but the referee decided it was a dive and waved
play on.
Whitburn had one last chance to equalise when
they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Stuart Gilmour took
the kick but Kilwinning's defence blocked the effort and Whitburn were
out of this season's Scottish Cup.

Bo'ness 2 Whitburn 1, Scorer - Haddow
Whitburn played with the stiff breeze at their backs for the first half
and had new signing from Berwick Rangers, Lloyd Haddow playing at left
midfield.
Whitburn came close after 5 minutes when McGlynn cut in from the left
and hit a dipping shot from outside the box which beat keeper Binnie but
hit the bar and went over.
Bo'ness came into the game and came close with a couple of efforts.
Paul McGinlay got on the end of a cross from the left, but his first time
shot from the edge of the box was mis-hit and Walker gathered easily.
Then Hodge cut in from the right and curled a left foot shot from 20
yards narrowly past Walker’s right post, although the keeper looked to
have it covered.
Haddow’s strength in the air set up a chance for Stuart Gilmour. He
headed the ball down to Gilmour at the left of the goals, but Stig pulled
his first time volley across the face of goal and past from about 10 yards
out.
Haddow set up Kevin Craig with another header, this time on the right
of the box, but his powerful drive went over the bar.
Whitburn opened the scoring after 28 minutes. Lloyd Haddow was having
an impressive debut, linking well with his new team-mates, and it was he
who made the breakthrough. Davie McGlynn crossed from the right and the
ball fell to Haddow inside the six-yard box. His first touch took
the ball away from goal but a clever back heel deceived the keeper and
found the net.
Bo'ness equalised with a penalty kick after Henderson had brought down
Hodge in the box, Inglis scoring with a well taken kick.
Gilmour almost restored Whitburn's lead a couple of minutes later wit
an opportunist effort. The Bo'ness keeper ran out to the touchline to clear
the ball, but it ended up at the feet of Gilmour in the middle of the park.
Gilmour shot towards the empty goal from about 40 yards out, but the keeper
just managed to get back and make the save.
The game boiled over just before half time with a player from each
team being sent off. Hannah went in hard on Ryan who retaliated and was
ordered off. Hannah was booked for the tackle then received a second yellow
card, presumably for dissent.
Half time: Bo'ness 1 Whitburn 1
Whitburn should have scored 2 minutes into the second half. The ball
was crossed from the left and spun into the air towards Craig at the right
of the box, 12 yards out. The Bo'ness defence and keeper had been dragged
to the left hand side of the goal, but with the goal empty, Craig somehow
headed the ball onto the roof of the net.
Whitburn created several more half chances during the opening period
of the second half but failed to seriously trouble the Bo'ness keeper.
In the best move of the game, Whitburn broke from the right of their
own box. The ball was swept out to McGlynn on the left and he ran forward
before playing the ball across field to MacKenzie on the right. MacKenzie
controlled the ball before playing it back to McGlynn on the edge of the
box. He took the ball past the defender and shot from 18 yards, but the
keeper was in the right place and made a good save.
Bo'ness came more into the game after this and hit the bar with a shot
from Hodge from 30 yards out after they had won possession in midfield.
Then Walker brought off a great reaction save, coming out to deny McGinlay
after 79 minutes. The Bo'ness forward beat the offside trap and ran onto
a through ball. With just the keeper to beat he hit a good shot, but the
Walker did well to dive and block the effort which was cleared to safety.
Bo'ness went ahead with another penalty 10 minutes from the end. Bruce
Clouston impeded McGinlay in the box, and the Bo'ness man took the kick
himself, giving Walker no chance.
Whitburn fought back and were awarded a penalty 3 minutes from the
end when McGlynn was brought down in the box. Stuart Gilmour took the kick,
but the keeper guessed correctly and dived full length to save.
On the balance of play, and chances created, this is a game that Whitburn
know they should have won, so perhaps it was frustration that caused Campbell
to commit a rash tackle in the dying seconds, with Bo'ness trying to play
out time at the touchline. Having booked him in the first half, the referee
had no option other than to send him off.

Despite having most of the possession, Whitburn found it difficult to
make any impression on the Sauchie defence during the first half, perhaps
due to this being their first game for three weeks. Eventually, however
they progressed comfortably to the 3rd round without being seriously tested.
McGlynn had an early opportunity when he got free inside the box, but
was forced wide and the chance was lost.
Whitburn opened the scoring in the 15th minute. A corner kick was swung
in from the right, and Gallen powered in a header which hit the bar and
came straight down to McGlynn who bundled the ball over the line.
Sauchie had a chance near the end of the half when Clouston was short
with a pass to Campbell, but Sauchie's Jaffa shot wide.
Whitburn went forward again and Callum Milne saw his effort come back
off a post.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Sauchie 0
Whitburn took a grip on the game in the second half and sealed the victory
with two quick goals. McGlynn had a couple of early chances, the first
a header which was saved, and the he showed excellent control when he gathered
the ball with his back to goal, turned and hit a shot which clipped the
bar and went over.
Five minutes into the half, Paul Taylor picked up a clearance just
outside his own 18 yard box and went on a 60 yard run up the left touchline
before playing the ball inside to McGlynn. He crossed to the opposite corner
of the box to Pat Clark, who controlled the ball and lobbed it back
across goal. Whether it was intentional is debatable, but it somehow found
it's way over the keeper and dropped into the net at the far post.
A couple of minutes later, McGlynn was fouled from behind in the box
and a penalty was given. Callum Milne had no trouble scoring from
the spot.
Five minutes later, first McGlynn then Gilmour had attempts at goal
that were blocked before eventually being cleared.
Andy Hume replaced Stuart Gilmour after 60 minutes and scored the fourth
goal after 75 minutes. Davie McGlynn gained possession inside the box on
the left, and toyed with the Sauchie defence before playing the ball to
the far post where Hume had a simple tap in.
Hume should have scored his second goal when he got on the end of a
low cross from the right, but blasted the ball over from 8 yards out with
the goal gaping.
The fifth goal came two minutes from the end. McGlynn gathered the
ball on the right, cut into the box and fired in a low drive from a tight
angle. Two Sauchie defenders and the goalkeeper tried to block the effort,
but it hit one of the defenders legs and ended up in the net.

Whitburn 2 Hurlford 1, Scorers - MacKenzie, Gilmour
This game was played on a heavy surface and in
a stiff breeze, which made it difficult to play good football.
Whitburn went close in the opening minutes when
a Davy McGlynn header went just over the bar.
The game settled into something of a midfield
battle, with both teams trying to ensure they gave nothing away.
In the 30th minute, Ashcroft (who along with
Sim played for Irvine Meadow against Whitburn in last season's competition)
sent a powerful header just over the Whitburn bar.
Alan MacKenzie opened the scoring for Whitburn
in the 35th minute. Kenny Hannah crossed from the right, and MacKenzie glanced
a header into the net from 10 yards out.
There were chances at both ends just before half
time. Ashcroft had another header which Walker saved, then Davy McGlynn
broke from his own half but was unable to beat the keeper.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Hurlford 0
With the wind at their backs in the second half, Whitburn pushed forward
looking for a second goal.
Paul Taylor saw a 30 yard free kick saved by the keeper, then Gilmour
got free on the right and fired in a fierce shot which the keeper blocked
at the post. Alan MacKenzie sent over an inviting cross from the right,
but unfortunately found no takers.
Hurlford gained a free kick following a trip at the edge of the box,
which looked very close to being a penalty. The kick was driven against
the wall then Lennox sent the rebound high over the bar.
McGlynn came close for Whitburn with a shot from the right which went
just past the post.
Whitburn went 2-0 ahead in the 65th minute. Hurlford gave away a free
kick just outside the box, and Stuart Gilmour curled a left foot shot around
the wall and into the net with the keeper rooted to his line. In the celebrations
which followed, Whitburn were reduced to 10 men when Milne was sent off
for comments to the linesman who had missed him being barged by a Hurlford
player. He could consider himself unfortunate as his first half booking
seemed to only come after several Hurlford players had intimidated the
referee. Milne had been fouled and had words with his opponent when he
got back on his feet.
Shortly afterwards Maratea replaced Taylor and slotted into Milne's
left back position.
For the remainder of the game Hurlford enjoyed more possession but
were unable to make any impression on a strong Whitburn defence, with Kevin
Henderson having a solid game at centre half, coping with everything that
came his way.
Hurlford almost pulled a goal back a couple of minutes from time, when
the number 11 stretched out a leg at the far post following a cross from
the left, but could only direct the ball into the side netting.
Hurlford scored in the last minute when substitute McQueen fired in
a powerful shot from 25 yards which Walker couldn't get near.
Stewart Walker had a couple of brave saves during the second half,
diving to gather the ball at the feet of incoming forwards.
Near the end McGlynn got clear just inside Hurlford's half but didn't
have the energy to make for goal, allowing defenders to get back and force
him wide, and the opportunity was lost.
The final 2-1 scoreline suggests that this was a close game, however
Whitburn were in control for most of the game, with Hurlford lacking punch
up front and trying to compensate for this by being over-physical at times.

Camelon 1 Whitburn 4, Scorers - Gilmour(pen), Hannah, McGlynn(2)
Camelon did most of the early running and almost scored in the first
minute, but Whitburn cleared. Walker brought off a good save from the resulting
corner..
Kenny Hannah came close for Whitburn, firing wide from a tight angle
after he cut in from the right.
Camelon's strong running and quick movement was causing problems for
the Whitburn defence, and they created several good chances during the
first half.
They should have scored after Gilmour lost the ball in the centre of
the park. Whitburn's defence was caught going forward, allowing Sinclair
to break through on goal. He rounded the keeper but was forced wide, and
by the time he squared the ball, Walker had recovered and brought off another
good save.
Camelon came close again when a looping volley went narrowly over from
almost on the byeline on the right.
Camelon eventually opened the scoring after 20 minutes when the ball
was crossed from the wing and the unmarked Sinclair headed home.
Whitburn came more into the game after this, with Paul Taylor and Callum
Milne combining well up the left, however on each occasion, the Camelon
defence were able to clear any ball into the box.
Davy McGlynn was also causing problems for Camelon, but again without
any sign of a breakthrough.
Paul Taylor was unlucky to see an overhead kick from 16 yards beat
the keeper but come back off the bar.
Whitburn equalised after 35 minutes with a penalty kick. In what was
almost a replay of last season's Scottish cup final, Callum Milne played
a one-two before breaking into the box between two defenders, one of whom
stuck out a leg and brought him down. Stuart Gilmour drove the resulting
kick low into the net for his 8th goal of the season.
The first half was very entertaining, although it had been played for
periods in a heavy downpour, and the ground was quite slippery. Both teams
contributed to the open play, but Camelon would be disappointed at going
in with the scores level, given that they enjoyed the bulk of the scoring
opportunities.
Half time: Camelon 1 Whitburn 1
In contrast to the first half, the second half was totally dominated
by Whitburn, and they scored straight from the kick off. Paul Taylor took
the ball up the left and sent a great cross into the six yard box. Kenny
Hannah got in front of the defenders to power home a diving header at the
near post for his first goal of the season.
Four minutes later Whitburn scored again with a goal which was a repeat
of the second. Taylor again crossed following good work on the left, and
this time Davy McGlynn found space to head home.
Whitburn's fourth goal came in the 60th minute following good work
from MacKenzie. He intercepted a poor passback, went past a defender then
hit a low shot which came back off the base of the post. The rebound came
out to Davy McGlynn who side footed the ball high into the net from 16
yards.
There was no more scoring, but Gilmour should have made it five when
he miskicked a low cross from the left with the goal gaping, only to see
the ball spin wide.
Camelon had been impressive in the first half, but in the second they
resorted on several occasions to dangerous tackles, perhaps out of frustration,
which a firmer referee would probably have punished more severely.

Harthill 1 Whitburn 2, Scorers - Taylor, Gallen
This game saw both teams fielding new signings. Whitburn had former
Raith Rovers forward Alan MacKenzie on from the start, and Harthill lined
up with two players who had moved from Whitburn during the week, Derek
Black and John Sokoluk.
Whitburn were without top scorer, David McGlynn, and last weeks website
Man of the Match, Pat Clark.
The first incident of note came when Stevie Gallen got to the byeline
on the left and fired the ball across the face of goal. His Whitburn team-mates
however were slow to support him, and the ball found no takers.
Whitburn took the lead after 15 minutes through Paul Taylor. Bruce
Clouston swung in a cross from the touchline on the right of the park.
Oscar outjumped the defender at the back post and headed the ball under
the diving keeper from six yards out.
A couple of minutes later, Taylor had a long range effort comfortably
held by the keeper.
Taylor, again, came close to scoring with a free kick from the edge
of the box after Stuart Gilmour had been fouled. His chip over the wall
looked goal bound until the Harthill keeper stretched to tip the ball away
for a corner.
Stevie Gallen should have scored 10 minutes from the break. The ball
was played across from the right to Stevie inside the six yard box. He
chested it down, but with the goal gaping, the ball got stuck under his
feet and he was crowded out.
Whitburn were to regret this miss a couple of minutes from half time.
Gilmour lost the ball in the middle of the park, and a Harthill player
hit a great shot from 30 yards which came back off the bar. Derek Black
was first to react and had an easy job to side-foot home from six yards
for the equaliser.
Half time: Harthill 1 Whitburn 1
Whitburn restored their lead 15 minutes into the second half. Stevie
Gallen made up for his earlier miss by running onto a through ball and
rounding the keeper to score.
Andy Hume replaced Alan MacKenzie near the end, and although only on
the park for a short while, showed some good touches, and is hopefully
getting back to the kind of form that earned him a Scotland cap last season.
Harthill put the Whitburn defence under pressure towards the end of
the game, but their was no further scoring, although both teams missed
some good opportunities.

O.V.D. Scottish Cup 2nd round
Whitburn 9 Bishopmill United 0, Scorers - McGlynn(2), Gilmour(2), Gallen(2), Taylor, Milne, o.g.
Whitburn, who had Callum Milne back in the team for the first time this
season following his lengthy suspension, went at Bishopmill right from
the kick off, and after 5 minutes Gilmour hit a shot from 18 yards which
the keeper managed to block. Gallen almost scored from a couple of yards
following a cutback from the right, but the ball came across too quickly
and he was unable to connect. As expected, Whitburn were enjoying the bulk
of the possession, but it wasn't until the 20th minute that they opened
the scoring. Paul Taylor crossed from the left, and Davy McGlynn chested
the ball into the net at the back post. McGlynn made it 2-0 a minute later
when he gathered a low Gallen shot inside the box and turned the defender
before placing the ball past keeper Dunn.
Taylor scored the 3rd goal after 35 minutes when he charged down a
clearance 30 yards out, and played a 1-2 with McGlynn at the edge of the
box, before placing a low shot into the keepers left hand corner.
Whitburn goalkeeper Stewart Walker didn't have much to do during the
first half, but he had to be alert shortly before half time to tip a tremendous
30 yard effort over the bar for a Bishopmill corner, which came to nothing.
Half time: Whitburn 3 Bishopmill 0
Last season, Whitburn would probably have settled for this scoreline
and played the remainder of the game trying to ensure they gave nothing
away. Derek Strickland, now assisted by ex-Harthill boss Denny McComiskey,
is puting together a team which likes to go forward, and the result was
a further six goals in the second half.
Goal number 4 came just three minutes into the half. Stephen Gallen
sent in a low cross from the right which the keeper came to collect. However
the full back stuck out a foot and deflected the ball past him into the
net.
Callum Milne scored the fifth from the edge of the box with a first
time shot through a crowd of players, when an attempted headed clearance
fell right to him.
With Bishopmill starting to flag, Gallen took advantage of indecision
in the defence to score the sixth after 70 minutes.
Two minutes later Stuart Gilmour picked up the ball in the centre circle,
ran forward and hit a shot from 25 yards, which bounced in front of the
diving keeper, and over him into the net.
Gilmour got his second and Whitburn's eigth two minutes after that
with a well struck free kick from outside the box.
Whitburn, having made their 3 substitutions, were reduced to 10 men
when Kevin Henderson injured his leg and was unable to continue. Bishopmill
found themselves in the same situation a short time later, and also had
to play out the game with 10 men.
Gallen completed the scoring in the 90th minute when he picked up the
ball outside the box on the left, ran along the edge of the box and hit
a great shot into the top corner of the net for his second goal of the
game.
As the scoreline suggests, this was a comfortable victory, but Bishopmill
kept trying to go forward throughout the game, only to find the Whitburn
defence in good form, with Pat Clark in particular producing a solid and
composed performance at the back.

Whitburn 2 Bo'ness 2, Scorers - MacKenzie, Gilmour
Both teams came close to scoring in the opening stages, Bo'ness hitting
the post, then Gilmour having a great shot which was just off target. Bo'ness
opened the scoring after 20 minutes through a Paul Taylor own goal. Keeper
Stewart Walker brought off a great save but was unfortunate to see the
ball strike the backtracking Taylor and end up in the net.
Whitburn went after the equaliser, but almost went two goals down following
a 30 yard Smith effort which had Walker bring off another great save.
Whitburn equalised 5 minutes from half time from a corner kick on the
left. Kenny Hannah played the ball into the box and Alan MacKenzie,
playing his first game for Whitburn, powered a header into the top corner
from around the penalty spot.
Bo'ness regained the lead one minute before half time with a goal from
former Whitburn player Darrell Drew who seems to make a habit of scoring
against Whitburn, having scored twice the last time the teams met. Whitburn
had a couple of chances to clear the ball, but failed to do so. The ball
was laid off to Drew, and he hit a super drive from 20 yards through a
crowded box, and out of reach of the diving Walker.
Whitburn equalised straight from the restart. MacKenzie was brought
down in the box, and Stuart Gilmour scored with the penalty kick
to make the half time score 2-2.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Bo'ness 2
Bo'ness almost regained the lead a few minutes into the second half
when McKinlay headed just past. He was booked after protesting too vigorously
that he had been fouled.
McGlynn came close for Whitburn after 70 minutes, with a double effort
from a free kick just outside the box. The first attempt was blocked by
the wall, but the ball broke straight back to him. The second attempt went
through the wall but keeper Binnie was in the right place to make the save.
Bo'ness looked the team most likely to score in the last 15 minutes.
McKinlay had the ball in the net but was adjudged to be offside. The same
player should have scored with just 5 minutes left but his shot from four
yards went narrowly past, under pressure from a Whitburn defender.
Bo'ness forced 3 corners in the last couple of minutes but were unable
to score thanks to solid defending by Whitburn, with Colin Campbell in
particular, who gave a solid performance throughout the match, doing well
when clearing his lines.
The game was played on a very heavy pitch following recent rain, and
Stuart Gilmour's display in the middle of the park was also outstanding.

Johnstone Burgh 0 Whitburn 2, Scorers - Taylor, McGlynn
Whitburn enjoyed a surprisingly easy passage into the 2nd round against
a Johnstone Burgh team who had run them so close in the final of this competition
just over 4 months previously. The conditions were difficult, with the
pitch greasy following a prolonged drizzle, which continued for most of
the game.
There weren't many real chances in the opening period, but Whitburn
came close after 5 minutes when Kevin Henderson headed narrowly past from
a corner kick. Stuart Gilmour almost scored in the 30th minute when he
drifted into the box to get on the end of a Davy McGlynn cross from the
left, but his side foot shot went just past.
The opening goal came 2 minutes later, Paul Taylor powerfully
heading home a great cross from Davy McGlynn on the right.
Johnstone Burgh had the ball in the net a few minutes later, but it
was disallowed for a push on Colin Campbell.
Just before half time keeper Chris Smith came rushing out to a through
ball, slipped on the greasy surface and skidded into the backtracking Taylor.
The ball broke loose to a Johnstone forward at the right of the box, but
with an open goal, he put the ball wide. Both Whitburn player's needed
treatment before the game could continue. Taylor had to be replaced, with
Kevin Craig coming on. Smith was able to play on, but looked to be limping
for the rest of the match, however he still had a good game in spite of
this.
Half time: Johnstone Burgh 0 Whitburn 1
Johnstone started the second half with a substitute keeper, their original
keeper having been injured during the first half.
Andy Hume came close with a diving header following a cross from the
right, then Davy McGlynn made space for himself on the right before firing
in a shot from about 25 yards which the keeper tipped over. From the resulting
corner, the ball fell to McGlynn inside the six yard box, and after
bringing it under control, he fired home the second goal, after only 5
minutes of the second half.
After this, Whitburn were content to defend their lead, and restricted
Johnstone Burgh to numerous long range efforts, few of which found the
target. Disappointingly from Johnstone's point of view, this appeared to
be their main attacking ploy for most of the game, and ensured that Whitburn
ran out comfortable winners.

Whitburn 4 Glenrothes 3 (after extra time. 3-3 at 90 minutes), Scorers - Gilmour(2), Gallen, Sokoluk.
Whitburn did most of the early running, but it
was Glenrothes who opened the scoring after 20 minutes, when a free
kick from the right was floated into the box, and was headed powerfully
home by Hutchison.
Whitburn kept pressing and McGlynn came close
before Glenrothes had a man sent off after 30 minutes for a second yellow
card offence, then, against the run of play, went 2-0 up 5 minutes later.
Colin Campbell attempted a pass back to Chris Smith, but put the ball out
for a corner kick. The kick was played to the near post where it was headed
on, to be headed home at the back post by Hutchison.
Whitburn were trying to find a way to goal. Gilmour
had a good chance, but shot wide, and fine saves from the Glenrothes keeper,
Guppy, denied Taylor and McGlynn in the last 10 minutes of the half.
Half time: Whitburn 0 Glenrothes 2
Whitburn scored within 5 minutes of the restart.
A Taylor corner from right was played to Gilmour at the edge of
box. He cut along the 18 yard line before hitting a low left foot shot
into the net.
Glenrothes were being pushed back, but broke
away to score a 3rd goal. Campbell had a long range shot blocked at the
edge of the box, and the clearance caught the Whitburn defence out of position.
Hutchison picked up the ball on the left a ran forward into the box, before
beating Smith with a well placed shot for his hat trick.
Gilmour again pulled Whitburn back into the game,
in the 70th minute, following good work by Clouston in the centre of the
park.
Clouston won the ball and played a short pass
forward to Gilmour about 30 yards out. He ran on and scored from
25 yards with another low, left foot shot.
Whitburn were dominating the game but it wasn't
until the last minute that they managed to equalise, Stevie Gallen
heading home at the back post to take the game into extra time.
Glenrothes had another man sent off in extra
time, again for a second bookable offence.
John Sokoluk scored the winner with a
well placed header 10 minutes from the end of extra time.
With Glenrothes down to 9 men, Whitburn were
creating chances and came close to scoring again. Black hit the post, and
the rebound ran along the front of goal towards Hannah and McGlynn, but
neither could take advantage and the ball was cleared.
Then McGlynn powered a header over the bar with
the keeper beaten, following a great cross from the right.

Linlithgow 2 Whitburn 3, Scorers - Taylor, Hume, McGlynn
With three ex-Whitburn midfielders, Ramage, Landels and Logan in their
ranks, and former Whitburn coaches McNaughton and Burgess in charge, Linlithgow`s
motto these days seems to be, 'If you can't beat them, buy them'. However
they still lost, thanks to a super first half display by Whitburn, and
Linlithgow fans must be asking why David McGlynn was allowed to move to
Whitburn after he scored what turned out to be the winning goal, with a
stunning strike.
The opening stages were confined mainly to midfield, with few clear
chances being created.
Linlithgow scored the first goal after 20 minutes when Logan rose unmarked
to head home from a corner kick.
A couple of minutes later, Ramage should have made it 2-0 when he had
plenty of time in front of goal, and only the keeper to beat. Chris Smith
did extremely well to spread himself and save the shot with his foot.
This miss was to prove costly, as Whitburn equalized in the 25th minute.
Paul
Taylor picked up a loose clearance and fired in a low shot from outside
the box. Keeper Wilson may have had it covered, but the ball took a deflection
off a defender, wrong-footing the keeper and nestling in the corner of
the net for Taylor's first goal in this, his testimonial season.
Five minutes later, Whitburn went ahead. Kenny Hannah raced down the
right wing, and outpaced the full back before sending over a perfect cross
from the bye-line. Andy Hume was waiting in the box and headed home
his first goal of the season.
In the 35th minute, Davy McGlynn gave the perfect reply to Linlithgow
for allowing him to leave, when he fired home a stunning strike into the
far corner of the net after good work by Taylor to win possession. This
was McGlynn's sixth goal in the four games since he joined Whitburn, and
continues his record of having scored in every game.
Chris Smith brought off a great save just before half time, when he
jumped to push a lobbed shot from the right over for a corner.
Half time: Linlithgow 1 Whitburn 3
Whitburn opened the second half looking to extend their lead. First
Hannah raced past the left back and fired in a drive from the right wing,
which went narrowly past the far post. Then Andy Hume turned inside the
box and sent the ball goalwards. Keeper Wilson did well to dive full length
and bring off a great save.
In the 60th minute Linlithgow pulled a goal back when Dickov scored
after a mix up in Whitburn's defence let him in.
Two minutes later, Logan was booked for a bad tackle on Hannah which
led to the Whitburn player being stretchered off and replaced by Sokoluk.
Thankfully, the injury isn't as bad as was first feared.
It was almost all Linlithgow now with Whitburn being pushed deeper
and deeper into defence, and having to produce some desperate clearances.
On 3 separate occasions, shots were cleared off the line with Smith beaten.
Whitburn's cause wasn't helped when first McGlynn then Henderson were forced
to leave the field due to injury, to be replaced by Gallen and McPhee.
In the final minute Smith brought off the save off the match to prevent
Flynn equalizing, when he dived full length to fingertip a shot which was
heading for the top corner, over the bar.
I have to say that the refereeing in this match, particularly in the
first half, bordered on the biased, with numerous heavy challenges from
Linlithgow players, particularly Landels, going unpunished, and Whitburn
being penalised for challenges that were certainly no worse. In spite of
this, however, Whitburn held out to go back to the top of the League, and
things are looking a lot better after the indifferent start to the season.

Whitburn 3 Harthill 0, Scorers - McGlynn(2), Wilson
Whitburn enjoyed a comfortable victory, recording their first clean
sheet of the season, and have produced significantly improved performances
in the last two games.
Whitburn almost opened the scoring after 5 minutes, when Dave McGlynn
did well to win the ball at the byeline and played it back into the box
to Stuart Gilmour, who's shot looked goalbound until Harthill keeper Walker
brought off the first of several excellent saves.
The opening goal came after 15 minutes when David McGlynn made
space for himself at the left of the box and placed the ball low into the
far corner of the net.
Harthill had a man sent off after 30 minutes following two yellow cards
in quick succession.
Gallen brought another fine save out of Walker with a shot on the turn
before McGlynn scored his own and Whitburn's second goal, right
on half time, when he beat the keeper at the near post with a shot from
a tight angle.
The first half had been dominated by Whitburn, with Gilmour in particular
coming close on a couple of occasions, and Smith not having much to do
in goal.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Harthill 0
McGlynn almost scored his hat trick within a couple of minutes of the
second half, but keeper Walker again saved well.
20 minutes into the half, some desperate defending by Harthill saw
three efforts blocked inside the six yard box before the ball was cleared.
Shortly after this Harthill had a second man sent off, again for two
yellow card offences.
Terry Wilson came on as sub for his first appearance of the season,
and scored immediatly with his first touch of the ball in the 80th minute.
The ball was played to the edge of the box from a corner kick and Wilson
sent a right foot volley it into the top corner of the net.
A couple of minutes later, Smith, who had not had much to do during

Arniston 1 Whitburn 3, Scorers - McGlynn(2), Gallen
Whitburn had new signing, 21 year old Kevin Henderson, who was signed
during the week from East Stirling, playing in the centre of defence. Last
season Kevin captained Easthouses under 21's to victory in the Scottish
Cup.
This turned out to be an open, entertaining game, with both teams committed
to attack and play moving from one end to the other.
Whitburn had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 2nd minute when
David McGlynn, playing up front this week, found space straight in front
of goal, but his weak effort from 16 yards went straight to Arniston keeper
Kirkwood.
Derek Black had a couple of half chances during the first half but
didn't trouble Kirkwood.
Arniston almost scored with a well executed corner kick after 30 minutes.
The kick was played to the right back, about 25 yards out, and his strong
shot through a crowded box was well saved by keeper Chris Smith, and cleared.
On the stroke of half time Smith had another great save to keep the
score at 0-0. Scally broke into the box on the left and found himself with
only the keeper to beat. The shot was well hit and looked goal bound, but
Smith reacted to fingertip the ball for a corner kick.
Half time: Arniston 0 Whitburn 0
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with both
teams looking for the opening goal.
Hannah came close for Whitburn, when he cut into the box and curled
a left foot effort to the far post, which Kirkwood managed to turn over.
Arniston made the breakthrough 10 minutes into the half. Smith could
only get his fingertips to a high ball across the face of goal, and when
it was played back across, Pryde scored with a simple header.
Whitburn brought on Gallen for Black and equalized almost immediately.
Davy McGlynn attempted a one-two with Paul Taylor, but the misdirected
pass came back to him off an Arniston defender. McGlynn made space,
turned and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Arniston came close after 70 minutes when a chip from Scally bounced
along the crossbar, via Smith's fingertips, before being cleared.
Whitburn stepped up a gear in the last 15 minutes in search for the
winner. McGlynn burst into the box on the right and fired in a shot which
cannoned off the post and back into play. Then Gallen found himself with
just the keeper to beat, following neat work from McGlynn, but saw his
shot saved. Seconds later Hannah fired in a cross from the right and Gallen
headed home to make the score 2-1.
Arniston pushed forward and, in the 85th minute, Smith had another
great save when the Arniston forward got clear of the defence and fired
in a shot.
McGlynn sealed victory in the final minute. His first effort
was saved by Kirkwood, but he picked up the loose ball and rounded the
keeper to score.

Whitburn 2 Edinburgh 4, Scorers - McGlynn, own goal
Whitburn fielded new signing from Linlithgow Rose, David McGlynn, but
the disappointing start to the season continued with this defeat at home
to newly promoted Edinburgh United.
Edinburgh were three goals up after just 15 minutes thanks mainly to
some poor defending from Whitburn.
The first goal came after 5 minutes when former Whitburn forward Davie
Scott beat Paul Taylor to a ball into the corner and played the ball back
across the 18 yard line. Whitburn's defence had an opportunity to clear
but failed to do so, allowing Chisholm to score with a shot in off Smiths
right hand post. Nicky Erskine gifted Edinburgh the second goal, when,
under no real pressure, he left his pass back to keeper Smith well short,
allowing Chisholm to round Smith and score.
The 3rd goal came after Davie Scott hit an overhead kick high in the
air from about 20 yards. The ball landed around the penalty spot, and when
Whitburn's defence failed to react, Edinburgh's Miller took advantage and
made the score 3-0.
Paul Taylor came close when a free kick from 25 yards hit the top of
the bar and went over.
Whitburn came into the game after this, but it wasn't until 10 minutes
to half time that they managed to pull a goal back. The ball fell to new
signing David McGlynn on the right of the box, and he showed composure
to place his shot into the far corner.
Whitburn should have scored again 5 minutes later when Gallen broke
through on the keeper but stumbled and the chance was lost.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Edinburgh 3
The second half saw Whitburn have more pressure without creating many
scoring chances. The best opportunity came when Hume got clear at the bye
line and played the ball across the face of goal. It was too firmly hit
and two inrushing Whitburn players were just inches away from connecting.
Against the run of play in the second half, Edinburgh scored. Edinburgh
broke through but were held up by Whitburn's retreating defence. The ball
eventually fell to a forward on the edge of the box and he fired home.
Whitburn scored 5 minutes later with a spectacular own goal. The ball
was driven into the box from the right. Hume challenged Edinburgh's centre
half, Wood, at the edge of the box and the ball deflected off Wood's shoulder
and looped high over the keeper into the net.
Edinburgh had Kelly off 5 minutes from the end for a second yellow
card offence.
Whitburn team : Smith, Clouston, Taylor, Campbell, Erskine, Craig(Black), Hannah, McGlynn, Hume, Gallen(McCawley), Gilmour. Subs not used- McPhee, Malcolm.

Bathgate 1 Whitburn 1, Scorer - own goal
With regular keeper Chris Smith unavailable, and no backup, Whitburn
had ex-Newtongrange keeper Alan Carswell in goal. Andy Hume and Stuart
Gilmour were also back in the starting line up, and they both had early
attempts cleared. Derek Black was also close to scoring but saw his header
saved by Bathgate keeper Balfour.
Bathgate took the lead after 20 minutes when Mungall fired home at
the 3rd attempt after earlier attempts were blocked in a crowded goalmouth.
Half time: Bathgate 1 Whitburn 0
Whitburn were again struggling to find any decent form, and it took
an own goal 5 minutes from the end to claim a share of the points.
Hannah drove the ball across goal after a Gilmour effort was deflected
into his path, and a Bathgate defender, standing a yard from his goal line,
was unlucky to see the ball cannon off him into the net.
Bathgate squandered several chances during the match, their poor finishing
ensuring that Whitburn's trialist keeper wasn't really tested.

Whitburn 1 Newtongrange 3, Scorer - Bonnar
The kick off was delayed by 15 minutes, but unfortunately it wasn't
to let the large crowd in , but because the Newtongrange strips had apparently
not arrived.
After a fairly even opening spell, the first real incident came in
the 10th minute. Whitburn keeper Smith was a bit slow in coming off his
line as a Newtongrange forward chased a ball into the right hand edge of
the box. When he got there his dive missed the ball but brought down the
player for a penalty, for which he was also booked. Smith made amends however,
by diving low to his right to turn the penalty round the post for a corner.
Five minutes later Whitburn took the lead following good work on the
left involving Black and Taylor. The ball was played into the box for Sean
Bonnar who beat the covering defender and scored.
A short time later Bonnar was unfortunate when his attempted dummy
near the half way line only succeeded in wrong footing his team mates.
Newtongrange gained possession and quickly played the ball into the box
to score the equaliser.
Newtongrange took the lead from a corner kick, when poor marking by
Whitburn allowed the Newtongrange player a free header into the far corner
from about 10 yards out.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Newtongrange 2
The third goal came 10 minutes into the second half when Newtongrange
broke on the left and outpaced the Whitburn defence before shooting low
past Smith into the far corner.
Whitburn were fortunate not to lose another couple of goals, as a physically
stronger and quicker Newtongrange team continually caused problems for
the Whitburn defence. However, a combination of desperate defending and
good saves from Smith kept them out.
Whitburn team : Smith, McCawley, Taylor, Campbell, Erskine, Clouston, Hannah, Bonnar, Black, Gallen, McPhee(Malcolm). No other substitutes.

Carlsberg League Cup 2nd round
Whitburn 3 Livingston 1, Scorers - McPhee, Gallen, Black
(Livingston were awarded this tie following a successful protest over
an ineligible player.)
Whitburn had Paul Taylor, Kenny Hannah and Bruce Clouston back for their
first game after suspension.
The first goal came after 10 minutes when McPhee cashed in on
a miskick by a Livingston defender to shoot home.
McPhee laid on the second goal shortly afterwards when he headed a
free kick back across goal for Gallen to tap in.
Billy McPhee was having a good start to the game and came close to
scoring his second goal from the bye line but the shot went across goal
and out at the far side. The game died after this with only half chances
being created . Smith brought off comfortable saves from a couple of long
range efforts, and at the other end the Livingston defence coped comfortably
with anything Whitburn tried.
Half time: Whitburn 2 Livingston 0
The second half got off to a lively start when Livingston pulled a goal
back through a Malcolm own goal. The Whitburn defence were posted missing
when the ball was played into the box from the Livingston left. Smith couldn't
cut out the cross and Malcolm, who had done well to jump and cut the ball
off from the opposition forward, was unlucky to see the ball cannon off
him into the empty net.
Whitburn had being sitting on their 2 goal lead but this goal forced
them to raise their game and they scored the third within 5 minutes.
A long clearance from Maratea found Kenny Hannah on the right. Hannah
did well to play a first time cross into the box, catching the defence
wrong footed and allowing Black to score.
As in the first half, their were few real scoring chances after this,
with Whitburn content to play the game out and Livingston unable to seriously
threaten Smith's goal.

Haddington 1 Whitburn 5, Scorers - Gilmour(2(1 pen)), Fairley, Gallen, Black
Whitburn, still short of players due to suspensions and holidays, again
had several new players in the team for this game.
Haddington took the lead after 10 minutes following a free kick from
near the corner flag. The ball was played across the six yard box and fell
to a Haddington player who fired home.
Whitburn equalised midway through the half from the penalty spot. Billy
McPhee picked up a clearance half way inside the Haddington half, and spotting
the keeper off his line, lobbed in a long range effort which looked to
be creeping in just under the bar. A Haddington defender jumped to punch
the ball over, giving away a penalty, and being sent off in the process.
Stuart
Gilmour scored comfortably from the spot. Ten minutes from half time,
Gilmour
scored
his second when he did well to control the ball and fire home a low shot
from the edge of the box.
The third goal came a minute before the break. Stevie Gallen turned
in the box and hit a shot which beat the keeper but rattled the base of
his right hand post. It ran along the goal line and was fired home by Grant
Fairley at the opposite post.
During the first half, Whitburn keeper Smith had an excellent save
from a 25 yard free kick, diving full length to push the ball for a corner.
Half time: Haddington 1 Whitburn 3
The second half saw Haddington put Whitburn under pressure without seriously
threatening Smiths goal, with several shots from outside the box going
high over the bar.
Gilmour came close to getting his hat trick when he ran from the Whitburn
half into the box and hit a left foot drive which the keeper did well to
parry for a corner. Whitburn came close again when Gallen's header from
a corner was saved by the keeper, the loose ball falling to Fairley who
also saw his effort blocked.
Whitburn came close on another couple of occasions, when Black lobbed
just over, and then Gilmour hit the bar, both efforts being
from the edge of the box.
Ten minutes from time, Haddington had another man sent off, apparently
for trying to kick Gallen. This effectively ended the game and Whitburn
scored another two goals in the time remaining. Gallen latched on
to a through ball, wriggled clear of a defender trying to pull him down,
and steered the ball past the advancing keeper. Then Derek Black
scored a similar goal with just a couple of minutes remaining to round
off a win which puts Whitburn at the top of the table after their first
league game.

Whitburn 2 Sauchie 1, Scorers - Fairley, Black
Before the game, Whitburn were presented with the O.V.D. Scottish Cup
Winners flag.
Whitburn, short of players due to a combination of suspensions, holidays
and transfers, fielded a team which contained only 3 players, Sean Bonnar,
Stuart Gilmour and Kevin Craig, who played in the Scottish Cup victory
in May. Chris Smith and Derek Black, unused substitutes at the final, also
played.
Sauchie took the lead after only 2 minutes when the ball was blasted
home following a cut back from the left.
Whitburn equalised 10 minutes from half time when Grant Fairley,
in his second spell with the club, headed home an accurate left wing cross
to the back post.
Half time: Whitburn 1 Sauchie 1
Derek Black headed the winner in the second half from another fine cross ball, this time from Kevin Craig on the right.
