Beyond The Horizon

Treks, Peaks, Walks and more from the UK to the Himalayas.

Ladakh

Once an independent Kingdom but now part of India, Ladakh is a country with a rich heritage. The people here are Tibetan Buddhists and up until the '50s used to send their young monks for training in Tibet. It is now virtually the last outpost of true Tibetan culture.

We have four tours of Ladakh. These are the Markha Valley and the Rupshu, Stok Kangri and the Nubra Valley , Ladakh and Himalayan Traverse and Lake Tsomoriri and Changtang Nomads

Markha Valley and the Rupshu.

A combination of the best known trek in Ladakh and a traverse of a newly opened, remote area.

From joining the tour in Delhi we fly over the Himalayas to Leh in the Indus valley. Visiting the Buddhist monasteries of Shey, Taktok and Thikse helps us acclimatise to the altitude prior to transferring to Spituk, the start point of our trek.

We spend the next few days in the Markha valley before branching off at Thoachungtse, near the foot of Kang Yatse peak, to enter the Rupshu region. This is a high and remote area, part of the Tibetan plateau and surrounded by mountains. This area is used for grazing by the Changspa nomads and we expect to see their herds of yak and dzo (a cow/yak hybrid). With luck, we may be invited into their black felt tents to try butter tea or chang.

We finally reach our transport at the roadhead and return to Leh over the Taglang La, the second highest motorable pass in the World.

The return flight to Delhi gives us the opportunity to look down on the mountains through which we have just trekked.

Once in Delhi there is an option to take a day trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.
