Proposal for Increasing the Number of Potential Body
Part Donors The existing procedure for altruistic people to agree to donate their body parts, after their death, for transplant purposes is to carry a Donor Card. We propose that it should also be possible for people to sign up online, via an Organ Donor Web Site. Proud to be a Donor The web site would include an Honoury Name List of Signed-up Donors, for all potential donors to opt into. We humans are pack animals, who are keen to follow fashionable convention. Once we become aware that some of our friends, work colleagues and celebrities we admire are on the list, we will be strongly tempted to join them. A Double Charity Bonus, Sponsoring groups of donors Companies and individuals should be encouraged to sponsor groups of donors. For example, a supermarket chain may be willing to make a small contribution to the Children in Need appeal, for every new donor signed up by a group of charity fund raisers. Each year, a fresh cohort of young people are drawn into charity work, so the supply of potential sponsored donors will not dry up. Sadly, healthy young people are the most likely to die sudden, violent deaths, so young idealists are our most prolific source of body parts.
