The recent schemes of the Department of Education and
Employment attach great importance to ensuring that all
places offered for four year olds are of good quality and
give good value for money. They have listed the definition
of a set of learning goals by the time children enter
compulsory schooling at the age of five, to ensure that
nursery education is of good quality and provides a sound
baseline for the National Curriculum. These guidelines pay
particular attention to the development of early literacy and
numeracy.

The School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (SCAA)
advice is broken down into six areas:
1. Personal, Social and Emotional
2. Language, Literacy and Communication
3. Mathematics
4. Creative Development
5. Physical Development
6. Knowledge and Understanding of the World

The learning goals provide a foundation for childrens's later
achievement, but realises that rates of progress will vary,
and all children should be able to make the maximum amount
of progress appropriate to them.
