The Alhambra II (or 11 as it reads on the shopfront) is a cheap dive of a place with no atmosphere and, to be honest, not a lot to recommend it. The restaurant is situated a couple of miles out of Bradford and has little competition in the area.

We started with onion bhaji (£1.00), onion pakora (50p), chicken pakora (£1.00), and mushroom bhaji (£1.00). They were without doubt the worst starters we've had in years. They were uniformly awful. The batter was soft and tasteless and the filling almost non-existent. We could not tell the difference, other than in the size of the portions, between the onion bhajis and pakoras. For the first time that I can recall, we could not bring ourselves to finish them. (To add injury to insult, one of the popadums was embedded with a hair.)

We were hoping for better things from the main dishes. I ordered a vegetable and mushroom. The portion was small, (which was a blessing, as it turned out), the sauce bland and sickly-sweet, and the vegetables not fresh but either frozen or tinned. The dall had the same sweet sauce and was little better. The prawn biryani earned the highest marks of the night (though our guest reviewer was from curry-starved Derby), but again the sauce was sickly and sweet. Both of the chicken dishes suffered from poor quality meat, and a bland unsophisticated sauce. The curries could be ordered either mild or medium - we all asked for ours medium: we dread to think what the mild varieties were like.

We finished off with above average coffee at 50p a cup.

The proprietor was complaining that it was hard to scrape a living - and we can understand why. This was the worse curry we've had in ages, and we cannot bring ourselves to recommend the place to our readers (unless, of course, you're masochist curry completists who's done every other restaurant in the city.)
