The Commonwealth is a small curry house with the appearance and atmosphere of a fast food outlet: moulded green plastic seats and formica tables bolted to the floor make for a spartan dining experience. It's surrounded by night clubs, and obviously caters mainly for the pub and club trade.

We kicked off with onion bhaji (£1.00), mushroom bhaji (£1.00), and vegetable samosas (£1.00). The onion bhaji were of the deep-fried onion ring variety, rather spindly and insubstantial, but tasty enough. The mushroom bhaji were better than average, and the vegetable samosas the standard Bradford item.

The curries were what might be expected from a restaurant geared to serving the late night club and pub rush - pretty average though acceptable, if not the cheapest in the city. The mixed vegetable curry and the mushroom dhansak scored the lowest points, being compared to Vesta curries. My vegetable madras was above average, hot but not too fiery, with a good selection of fresh vegetables. The vegetable masala was the best of the four, being both varied and richly spiced. The chicken rogan josh scored above average, though the portion for £4.30 was rather skimpy. The chapattis, by the way, were excellent.

So... would we recommend the Commonwealth? With so many curry houses to choose from in the city, we wouldn't put this at the top of the 'must try' list - but it does produce perfectly acceptable fare for late night revellers, and if you find yourself in the area and ravenous after a session on the booze, you might give it a go.

The coffee served here is better than most.
