This Kashmir - not to be confused with the Kashmir restaurant on Morley Street - has the appearance of a fast-food joint, with screwed-down tables and chairs, fluorescent lighting and a plastic menu board above the counter. It's main claim is the variety of excellent Asian sweets on offer: the curries are pretty average. We kicked off with onion bhaji (£1.00), mushroom bhaji (£1.30), potato bhaji (£1.00), and chicken pakora (£1.50). The bhajis were tasty enough, but the batter was soft - a pretty good sign that they'd been re-heated in a microwave. The chicken pakora was tough, wrapped in the same soggy batter. I had a chana dopiaza as my main dish. The chick peas were a little overcooked and tasteless, and the sauce rather gelatinous. The flavour was fine, not too hot but pleasantly spicy. The Vegetable special was much the same, though we suspect that the vegetables were either frozen or tinned. The chicken and spinach was disappointing: it looked extremely inviting, but failed to deliver. Instead of juicy spinach, the greenery lay flat and tasteless; the chicken was of poor quality too. We finished off with the cheapest coffee we've sampled so far (40p a cup) and not too bad, either - and a good array of barfi, gulab jaman and assorted sweets, all of which we recommend highly. All in all, we were a little disappointed with the Kashmir Bakery. It has the feel of a place where the curries are secondary to the production of sweets. It's well worth a try - you might catch it on a better day - but there are many better restaurants in the city to try out before this one. |
