We last visited Mughals exactly two years ago, and then we wrote: "Some of us thought Mughals superb, while others were not so impressed. The service was excellent and the portions very good."

Overall, this time around we were disappointed with the restaurant. Some of us (the vegetarians) have had excellent meals here in the past - the quorn curries have been exceptional. But the standard has fallen quite a bit since our last visit.

We started with onion bhaji (£1.00), potato bhaji (£1.20), chicken pakora (£1.50), vegetable pakora (£1.20.) They were all pretty average, the onion bhaji and veg pakoras and potato pakoras all a little under-spiced and stodgy. The chicken was described as very disappointing - tough and stringy.

The main meals were of a similar standard, too. My matter paneer, while the portion was excellent, was very bland and swimming in vegetable oil - to the point that it actually spoilt the dish. Also, the paneer was overcooked and tasteless. Usually, the quorn dishes are excellent, but this time the quorn and mushroom was mild and, again, soaked in inedible oil - and the mushrooms are no longer the excellent fresh, halved variety of old, but tinned. The daal paneer was enjoyed, but marks would have been higher if less oil had been used. The second matter paneer was described as: "A let-down. Not what I recalled from the last visit. It was bland, overcooked, and over-oiled." The karahi kofta, meat balls in sauce, was stodgy and insipid, and not enjoyed at all. The karahi murgh was described as: "... a fine dish, rich and tasty. Like many of the other curries, though, mine had a little too much oil, but not enough to spoil it. I knocked a point off for the quality of chicken, with an occasionally stringy morsel amongst nice chunky pieces."

Of course, we're willing to concede that we visited Mughals on a bad night - and we suggest that our readers try the restaurant out for themselves. Over the past year, on non-reviewing nights, I've had some very good meals here. (And a plus point is that the prices have remained the same in two years, and the portions very good.)

We last visited Mughals over two years ago - but in that time the restaurant has moved next door and gone up-market. Then it was a bit of a dive, a cheap, chapattis-thrown-in curry house with bucket-seats bolted to the floor. Now it's much roomier, more comfortable, and the fare has improved tremendously.

It must be said, though, that opinion was divided about this restaurant all the way down the line. While the starters were generally enjoyed, there was a voice of dissent. We had onion bhajis (£1.00), vegetable rolls (70p), potato bhaji (£1.20), and chicken pakora (£1.50). All the starters were freshly made and pungently spiced. The vegetable rolls, though tasty, were a little pricey at 70p a go, and one of our number thought the onion bhaji lacked crispiness. The rest of us liked them.

The main courses... Here the split was between the meat-eaters and the vegetarians. The carnivores complained that their dishes, karahi keema and karahi chicken boti, were too salty, masking whatever curry flavour there might have been. The portions were plentiful, however.

However, the vegetarian dishes were uniformly superb. I had a karahi daal with mushroom (not on the menu, but made up to order), and it was of a very high quality. Though it consisted of the tiny, bead-like daal I don't usually like, this dish was expertly spiced and very rich, and the mushrooms were exceptional. A dish found nowhere else in Bradford, Quorn curry, was tremendous, the generous chunks of Quorn lending themselves very well to the currying process. The karahi channa aloo with mushroom was likewise enjoyed. The motta paneer contained good chunks of cheese, and the peas were cooked to perfection - not at all mushy as in some places.

We finished off with decent coffee and a fabulous selection of very good barfi, gulab jaman, gajar halva (carrot cake), etc.

As can be seen from the marks awarded, some of us thought Mughals superb, while others were not so impressed. The service was excellent and the portions very good. We'd like to know what our readers think of this restaurant - give it a go and then contact us with your views.

Mughal's is another cheap, basic curry house of the type that abounds in Bradford. It's small, friendly, and shabby - and certainly won't win any design awards. But we don't judge the curry by the appearance of the restaurant... what did we think of the meal?

We began with gobi pakora (80p), onion bhaji (80p), and potato bhaji (80p). Unfortunately, the bangon (aubergine) bhaji was off - (I wanted to report that it was bang on!) The piled-up plate of gobi pakora was excellent value for money, and while four of us loved the dish, IanW thought it greasy. The other starters were pretty standard Bradford fare.

My main dish, mushroom and spinach, was very good: distinctively flavoured, spicy and substantial - one of the better curries I've sampled in recent months. Overall, the others enjoyed their curries. The vegetable dansaak was above average, nicely flavoured, and without the large chunks of pineaple usually found in this dish. The chick peas and potato bhaji was also enjoyed, the vegetables cooked to perfection and nicely spiced. However, the vegetable massala was disappointing: lacking in both taste and texture. Mughal's has an extensive menu, and a good vegetarian selection. A free popadom comes with every order.

We finished off with coffee (50p) which was pretty dreadful, and mango lassi (£1.00) which was delightful. We sampled a selection of excellent Indian deserts from the wide variety on offer, among which a ginger barfi was fantastic.
