The Panyam is a good, above average curry house which suffers from being next door to the excellent Darbaar (reviewed last week). It's smaller and cheaper than the Darbaar, (though excellent chapattis or boiled rice are included in the price of each curry) and the service is friendly and efficient. It serves a varied menu of curry dishes, as well as pizzas, burgers, southern fried chicken and kebabs. We kicked off with fine starters: onion bhaji (90p), mushroom bhaji (£1.00), and samosa (£1.00). The bhajis were of a very high quality, fresh, crisp, and full of flavour. I ordered a meat samosa by mistake, but the carnivores amongst us reported that it was better than the usual samosas on offer in the city. The main dishes were a mixed bag. I had my usual daal mushroom, and though it was a perfectly average example of the dish, it was a little too tomato-flavoured, and the daal lacked individual flavour. On the plus side, all the vegetarian side dishes made as main dishes cost only £2.80. The balti vegetable paneer scored highly, a rich, substantial dish with a good variety of mildly spiced vegetables, served with a mouth-burning hot pepper. The chicken tikka dopiaza was well flavoured but nothing special. The aloo matter was merely average and a little bland, the aloo chana bhuna likewise. Overall, the Panyam is another of those perfectly adequate restaurants which fall into the three star category. It's cheap, cheerful, and the starters and chapattis are excellent - while on the night we dined there the curies were variable. It's certainly worth a visit for the curry completist on the quest to do every Asian restaurant in Bradford. |
