From the outside, The Punjab Grill Centre looks like a kitchen showroom. Inside, surrounded by mirrors, white panels and brass fittings, I felt as though I was dining in a kitchen showroom. This is going to be a hard one to call. We were split on our opinion of this restaurant, with three of us enjoying our meals, the other three not at all impressed. First of all, it must be said that this place is one to avoid if you're a vegetarian. There were only two main courses on the menu suitable for non-meat eaters. (But, to be fair, it does advertise itself as a grill - so what did we expect?) We began with dahi phalay (£1.50), chana chat (£1.50), and chicken pakora (£2.20). The phalay was a cold chick pea concoction in yoghurt, highly spiced, not particularly appetising, and expensive. The chicken pakora was far better, the succulent chicken nicely flavoured. The chana chat was, in the words of MichaelH "cold and horrible..." I sampled a karahi dall tarka as a main course, and I found it pretty pedestrian and, though strongly spiced, lacking interest and variety. However, JohnH found it very much to his taste, appetising and satisfying. The karahi mixed vegetable was bland, with the chef showing no flair or invention - though, having said that, JulianF thought the same dish was perfectly acceptable and well above average, with a good selection of vegetables, nicely spiced. JonF Found his karahi chicken a little too hot for his taste, but otherwise perfectly acceptable. We finished with a rather poor coffee (£1.00) and some rather exceptionally good barfi. All in all, then, a bit of a mixed bag - this is definitely one of those places that the avid curry completist must try for themselves (but our recommendation is to give it a miss if you're a vegetarian.)
