The Red Rose in our opinion is a slightly below average curry house with a few good points to recommend it, but whose actual curry dishes - especially considering the competition in the city - are disappointing. We kicked off with a fine array of starters which built our hopes for the main dishes. We sampled onion bhaji, mushroom bhaji and potato pakora. They were of a high standard, especially the mushroom bhaji which boasted whole, fresh mushrooms in an excellent spicy batter. Unfortunately the main dishes failed to reach the same high standard. The majority of us ordered vegetarian dishes. At £2.80 they were certainly cheap, but had obviously not been prepared individually but with the same red, tomato-based sauce. I had chana mushroom, with tasteless ingredients smothered in a bland sauce. Likewise the chana potato gained low marks, "boring and undistinguished" was the verdict. The spinach dhal was bland and watery, bordering on the tasteless, while the chicken dhansak beared more resemblance to a korma. Overall, we were disappointed by the Red rose. The highlights were the starters, and the chapattis were excellent - as was the service. Although there was a good selection of Asian sweets on the menu, in fact only kulfi was available on the night we dined. We finished with an average coffee at 50p.
